Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field, or a combination of education and experience that demonstrates the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Experience working in a disability related academic or clinical setting.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as collaboratively as an effective team member.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, encompassing both oral and written communication abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Education, Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, or related field.
  • Strong ability to understand and address the unique needs of college students with disabilities, with a genuine interest in providing one‑on‑one support to meet their accessibility requirements in an academic environment.
  • Proficiency in interpreting a range of educational, psychological, and medical documentation.
  • Knowledge of disability law, including the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504, and its practical application for students with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of the Accessible Information Management (AIM) database.
Job Description

The Disability Specialist position works with students with disabilities to facilitate access to the educational environment. The Disability Specialist is responsible for collaborating with faculty and staff to improve accessibility and promote an inclusive environment. This position assists in the coordination of activities which increase disability awareness within the Texas State University community.

Job Duties
  • Provides ongoing service and case management to students with disabilities, including monitoring the effectiveness of accommodations, offering individual advocacy, and making referrals to relevant campus services and programs.
  • Offers resources that cater to the unique needs of students with disabilities, focusing on strategies specific to Texas State University.
  • Conducts meetings with students who request accommodations, which involves gathering, interpreting, and validating documentation (e.g., student self‑reports, medical records, school records) provided by the student. Through an interactive process, assesses the student’s disability and its impact on academic performance and campus engagement to determine appropriate accommodations.
  • Provides consultation and training to faculty and staff on accessibility issues and laws, serving as a knowledgeable resource for the accessibility needs and rights of students with disabilities.
  • Participates in disability outreach and awareness events.
  • Assists in the development and/or review of office publications, policies, and procedures.
  • Represents the department in university, division, and departmental committees and task forces.
  • Stays updated on research and best practices concerning students with disabilities in higher education.
