Position: Instructional Associate:  Band (26-27 SY)

Band Instructional Associate

The Band Instructional Associate will assist the Middle School Band Director with instructional duties that support the development of beginning and intermediate band students, sectional instruction, rehearsals, performances, and UIL-related activities throughout the school year.

Education/Certification:

High School Diploma Relevant music education, instrumental performance, or equivalent training preferred

Experience:

A background in instrumental music and band performance Experience working with middle school-age students preferred Experience providing individual, small-group, or sectional music instruction preferred Experience in concert band, ensemble performance, private lessons, or music education preferred

Special Knowledge/

Skills:

Knowledge of fundamental instrumental techniques, tone production, rhythm, music literacy, and ensemble skills Ability to evaluate student performance and assist in improving individual and group skills Strong organizational skills, communication, and interpersonal skills Ability to recognize errors in tone, rhythm, technique, articulation, balance, and intonation and demonstrate age-appropriate methods of instruction to improve student understanding and performance

Major

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Ensure communication with the Band Director and other staff members to support instructional goals, student progress, rehearsals, and performances
  • Attend assigned rehearsals and performances and instruct students in fundamental and developing instrumental techniques as needed
  • Assist with rehearsal and sectional plans in cooperation with the Band Director
  • Conduct individual, small-group, or sectional rehearsals as assigned, including before- or after-school rehearsals when needed
  • Provide technical and instructional support to students participating in SMCISD middle school band programs
  • Assist staff at curricular and extracurricular events, including but not limited to concerts, festivals, pep events, parades, and UIL activities
  • Work within the schedules of band classes and before/after-school activities as assigned by the campus Band Director
  • Follow guidelines established by SMCISD, UIL, and applicable federal and state law pertaining to band programs and student activities
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, materials, and equipment that reflect an understanding of the learning styles, developmental levels, and needs of middle school students
  • Communicate with the Band Directors to ensure coordination and consistency of instruction
  • Establish and maintain open communication with district staff, band directors, parents, and students
  • Maintain professional relationships with district staff, colleagues, band directors, parents, and students
  • Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students
  • Take necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
  • Maintain high expectations for student musicianship and performance while providing age-appropriate feedback and attention to individual student needs
  • Assist in ensuring students and the band program are prepared and equipped for rehearsals, sectionals, concerts, contests, and performances
  • Maintain a cooperative working relationship with other staff
  • Tools/Equipment Used: band instruments, music stands, chairs, tuners/metronomes, percussion equipment, and audio equipment
  • Posture:
    Prolonged sitting, standing, walking, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, twisting, etc.

    Mental Demands:
    Reading; ability to communicate effectively (verbal); maintain emotional control under stress

    Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
    Moderate standing, stooping, bending, and lifting.
