Position Description
The School of Theatre, Dance, and Film at Texas State University seeks an Assistant or Associate Professor of Scenic Design (Tenure Track or Professor of Practice), starting fall 2027. The successful candidate will join a nationally recognized department with a dynamic faculty dedicated to a collaborative and immersive approach to teaching graduate and undergraduate students.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Teach graduate and undergraduate courses in scenic design and related topics which may include drafting, history, analysis, and graphic skills.
- Mentor and advise graduate and undergraduate student designers on realized production work.
- Actively recruit exceptional candidates for the MFA design program.
- Participate in department production season planning.
- Collaborate with the Design, Technology, and Management Area in support of current initiatives and new developments.
- Maintain an active agenda of creative and/or scholarly research including occasional designs for department productions.
- Provide service to the School, College, and University, commensurate with rank.
Required Qualifications
Required qualifications for Assistant Professor Rank (Tenure Line):
- MFA in Theatre Design.
- Active record of professional scenic design experience in regional and/or commercial theatre.
- Strong CAD skills utilizing industry standard (Schematic, 3D, and Visualization).
- Strong digital and/or hand graphic skills that align with industry standards.
Required qualifications for Associate Professor Rank (Tenure Line):
- MFA in Theatre Design.
- Extensive and active record of professional scenic design experience in regional and/or commercial theatre; minimum of 7 years to be considered for Associate Rank.
- Strong CAD skills utilizing industry standard (Schematic, 3D, and Visualization).
- Strong digital and/or hand graphic skills that align with industry standards.
- University/college teaching experience.
Required qualifications for Assistant Professor of Practice Rank:
- Active record of professional scenic design experience in regional and/or commercial theatre; minimum of 7 years.
- Strong CAD skills utilizing industry standard (Schematic, 3D, and Visualization).
- Strong digital and/or hand graphic skills that align with industry standards.
Required qualifications for Associate Professor of Practice Rank:
- Extensive and active record of professional scenic design experience in regional and/or commercial theatre; minimum of 12 years.
- Strong CAD skills utilizing industry standard (Schematic, 3D, and Visualization).
- Strong digital and/or hand graphic skills that align with industry standards.
The successful applicant will receive the appropriate rank and title based on university and school established standards.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a secondary design discipline with a preference for costume or projection design.
- Experience teaching at the graduate and/or undergraduate level.
- Demonstrated mentorship of graduate students and/or assistant designers.
- Proven track record of effective collaboration.
- Experience in non-theatrical applications of design (e.g., themed environment, events).
- Demonstrated organizational and leadership skills suitable for academic program oversight.
