- Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration or closely related field
- Experience with supervision.
- 3 years of full-time experience working in university housing, residence life, or student affairs.
- Experience in crisis management and/or emergency response.
- Experience managing residential communities.
- Experience developing and conducting assessments.
- Experience with designing training programs. Experience with course design and instruction.
- Prior experience in housing and residential life.
The Assistant Director for Training and Development supports Residential Experience by designing, implementing, and assessing a comprehensive training program for all staff levels within the unit. This role supervises full-time professional staff and indirectly supervises graduate and student employees. The Assistant Director role focuses on expanding staff knowledge and skills to enhance student support, success and engagement. As a member of the Residential Experience leadership team, the Assistant Director will directly supervise Residence Directors and collaborate closely with departmental partners to advance training initiatives.
This position reports to an Associate Director for Residential Experience.
Supervision:
- Supervise and provide leadership for full-time Residence Directors and indirectly supervise Graduate Residence Directors and Resident Assistants.
- Provide ongoing direction and feedback about performance with supervises. Evaluate performance, including conducting performance evaluations effectively and efficiently and attending to their professional development.
- Assist in the recruitment and hiring of direct reports, including reviewing applicant materials, conducting candidate interviews, and offering recommendations for hiring.
- Develop competencies in other functional areas within Residential Experience ensuring effective guidance for supervises.
- Design and oversee all levels of training and ongoing professional development for Residential Experience staff, including professional and graduate staff and Resident Assistant training schedules.
- Develop learning outcomes and session objectives for all training initiatives. Establish and maintain professional relationships with departmental and university partners throughout the year to ensure the department stays in compliance with the various training requirements.
- Create and facilitate formal assessment of training programs with the explicit goal of continuously striving to improve the various training offerings to meet departmental priorities.
- Participate in 24-hour on-call rotation with live-in professional staff colleagues; recognize that residence halls are open 365 days a year and therefore being on-call during holidays should be expected; respond to student and/or facilities issues or crises as a third-tier responder and in person as needed 24-hours a day; high level of in-person response to mental health concerns, other student support situations should be expected.
