Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, communications or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Four years of experience in journalism, public relations, communications or related field.
  • Familiarity with AP Style.
  • Superlative writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to understand complex concepts and relate them in a clear, concise manner.
  • Ability to function efficiently in a deadline driven environment.
  • Able to multi-task with strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Strong public speaking skills; ability to represent TXST with confidence.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Fluency in Spanish; on-camera media experience; prior higher education or public sector communications experience.
  • Experience managing media strategy and press outreach in a university or mission-driven organization.
Job Description

The Division of Marketing and Communications seeks a media relations specialist with a proven track record for writing engaging stories and cultivating relationships with journalists to increase positive external awareness of Texas State University. The media relations specialist operates under the general supervision of the Director of Media Relations to promote a positive image of TXST among the university’s varied audiences with a particular focus on raising awareness of research initiatives, through leaders and faculty experts.

Job Duties
  • Write, edit, format and assemble media releases, feature articles, media pitches and other publications, ensuring that they follow style guidelines and other standards.
  • Transform technical, scientific and research content into compelling stories broadly accessible
  • Cultivate relationships with local, regional and national media to promote university programs, faculty expertise and timely news dissemination.
  • Help develop semesterly media outreach strategy informed by data and media insights to align with reputational and strategic goals.
  • Proactively identify and act on opportunities to pitch positive stories and capitalize on new media trends that support TXST’s reputation and strategic goals.
  • Provide consultation on writing and development of op-eds, thought leadership essays and faculty profiles.
  • Assist with distribution of information and media response for crisis and issues management.
  • Other duties as required.
