Position Overview
All positions are conducted by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, a tier‑1 public sector agency with mission to manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas. This internship is within the Watershed Conservation Team’s Healthy Creeks Initiative (HCI). The successful candidate will work under the direction of the Watershed Conservation Team Leader and other department biologists, travel independently or with a team, and conduct field sampling, laboratory work, surveys, and outreach related to the early detection and management of invasive and aquatic riparian plants.
GeneralDescription
The intern will be based out of San Marcos, but will conduct fieldwork across the HCI counties—primarily within the Edwards Plateau ecoregion—including substantial travel. Responsibilities include obtaining landowner permission forms for Arundo donax treatments, assisting volunteers with mapping, participating in public and landowner outreach, conducting kayak or boat‑based invasive plant surveys, applying herbicides, performing riparian plant surveys, entering PDMP spray sheets, representing the department, operating vehicles (driver’s license required), using fisheries sampling equipment, entering data, preparing maps in ArcGIS, performing equipment maintenance, and preparing routine administrative paperwork.
EssentialJob Duties
- 60% Conduct riparian invasive species surveys, monitoring, and management in riparian habitat associated with creeks and rivers.
- 15% Complete associated data entry, analysis, and reporting using GIS applications and MS Word and Excel.
- 10% Share responsibility with the team for maintaining and preparing field equipment, cleaning and maintaining chemical sprayers, and other related tasks.
- Valid driver’s license required upon hire. Ability to operate vehicles and other fisheries sampling equipment.
- Basic proficiency in ArcGIS and experience with Microsoft Office is preferred; basic field mapping and data entry skills are essential.
- Ability to work safely in harsh climatic conditions, remote locations, and difficult terrain, and to travel as required.
- Physical stamina required for fieldwork in hot, remote, and often sunny environments.
