SUMMARYDefines and manages strategic roles and serves as a subject matter expert in assigned categories. Negotiates merchandise program details to support store sales, including assortments, pricing, payment terms, and promotions. Responsible for the financial performance of assigned categories: inventory turnover, gross margin, GMROI, and sales. Develops and executes marketing and advertising programs to support store sales efforts.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Supports store operations with negotiated programs within assigned categories.
- Solicits input from Regional and Store Managers regarding assigned categories, listening to problems, complaints, and compliments to resolve issues and build on successes.
- Meets periodically with existing vendors to plan and review programs.
- Communicates program requirements, performance, store requests, and assortment changes.
- Reviews pending changes in vendor product mix.
- Prepares and presents program financial reviews and analyses for stock and special order sales, including turnover, gross margin, GMROI, and sales.
- Includes vendor performance analyses regarding lead time, error rates, quality, and customer service.
- Prepares and presents program line reviews, integrating competitor analyses and comparisons to competitive programs.
- Negotiates during line reviews to incorporate store needs, strategic category goals, and corporate financial objectives.
- Develops and implements marketing and advertising programs to promote assigned categories, negotiates and collects co‑op advertising funds, and reviews campaign effectiveness and efficiency.
- Meets with potential vendors of existing and new products; develops and implements new programs as needed.
- Communicates complete program schedules to stores by working with Store Planning and other departments.
- Works with inventory management, replenishment buyers, and store associates to ensure appropriate inventory levels for each store and season.
- Contributes ideas or suggestions for replenishment factors.
- Maintains up‑to‑date system and vendor information.
- Acts on store requests in a timely manner; sets up SKU information as appropriate with Merchandise Services.
- Collaborates with store personnel to ensure sound financial and assortment decisions.
- Works with the pricing team as needed.
- Visits retail stores and attends trade shows, vendor facilities, and company vendor shows to review product lines and placements.
- Provides administrative support to Merchants and Senior Merchants.
- Follows standard operating procedures while carrying out responsibilities.
- Attends all team meetings and company training sessions as required.
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS- Associate’s degree from a two‑year college or university; or one to three years of related experience and/or training; or a suitable combination of education and experience.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to present information effectively and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
- Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
- Ability to apply basic algebra and geometry concepts.
- Ability to solve practical problems with limited standardization.
- Ability to interpret instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Basic computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, and point‑of‑sale systems.
- Knowledge of basic and intermediate purchasing and merchandising principles.
- Maintain regular and acceptable attendance as determined by management.
- Regularly available to work at least 8 hours per day and 40 hours per week, or other hours as required.
- Available to work weekends and holidays as necessary.
- Occasional travel with overnight stays.
- Must meet driver’s license, rental vehicle, and auto liability insurance requirements.
Requires talking or hearing, standing, walking, sitting, using hands to handle or feel items, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and occasionally lifting or moving up to 50 pounds.
