Construction Technician

The Construction Technician performs construction, repair, and renovation work to support the safety, functionality, and appearance of City facilities, parks, and other properties. It delivers a wide range of skilled trade services—including pest control, carpentry, painting, drywall, glass repair, pedestrian doors, overhead (garage) doors and gate repairs, general HVAC, lighting, plumbing, concrete work, equipment operation, and other minor construction tasks—while providing technical troubleshooting and best-practice repair solutions.

This role contributes to efficient facility operations by addressing maintenance needs and supporting construction projects as directed.

Essential Functions

The following list highlights the main responsibilities of this position. While it covers the core tasks, it may not include every duty that could be assigned. Employees may be asked to take on other responsibilities as needed to support the team and department.

  • Provides construction labor and support for new buildings, remodels, renovations, and maintenance of existing City facilities and structures, including performing manual labor, repairing commercial doors, completing minor concrete work, and maintaining knowledge of safety regulations.
  • Supports project delivery by assisting contractors, coordinating with staff during construction activities, and responding to city and project emergencies through 24/7 on-call availability.
  • Ensures effective maintenance and construction operations by participating in inspections and contributing to safe and compliant work practices.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or required.
Minimum Requirements &

Preferred Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • One (1) year of related construction/maintenance experience.
  • Pest Control License issued by Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) or Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) is required within six (6) months of employment.
  • Valid Texas driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • General knowledge and understanding of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and generator technical operations.
  • Tyler Munis Work Order system experience

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of operating instructions, technical repair manuals, charts, and construction documentation, with the ability to read and comprehend detailed technical information.
  • Skill in verbal and written communication, with the ability to maintain effective working relationships with City staff, outside agencies, service providers, contractors, vendors, and suppliers.
  • Ability to work independently with self-motivation, plan and complete tasks with limited supervision, and continue professional development as required.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, work under pressure and deadlines, and perform detailed work with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to schedule, coordinate, and organize work efficiently and function effectively as a team member with diverse individuals.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position requires the ability to lift up to 80 pounds with assistance. Subject to vision constantly; sitting, handling and fine dexterity frequently; standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, reaching, hearing, talking and foot controls occasionally; kneeling, crouching, crawling, bending, twisting, climbing and balancing rarely.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Working conditions involves exposure to variable and/or extreme weather conditions, electrical currents, machinery with moving parts, hazardous chemicals/materials, infectious diseases, cuts, burns, or other physical harm. Utilizes personal protective equipment as required.
