Job SummaryResponsible for routine transportation and maintenance support work including roadway maintenance and repair, operation of light and heavy equipment, preventive maintenance of equipment, traffic control, and assisting the public during emergency situations. Position requires driving a TxDOT state vehicle and maintaining a Class “A” CDL within one year of employment.
Key Responsibilities- Assist in identifying, repairing, and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; perform basic welding as needed; use and operate equipment, tools, materials, and products related to these activities.
- Assist with traffic control; place and gather cones, warning signs and barricades; flag traffic.
- Move and pick up litter and roadway debris.
- Perform preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing, and minor repairs on equipment and complete required reports including timekeeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
- Provide support to local law‑enforcement officials at accident sites and assist stranded motorists as required.
- Respond 24/7 to roadway accidents, inclement weather, and natural disasters; assist in sanding or cleaning bridges and roads, posting warning signs, helping the public, and performing other work as directed during emergencies such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
- Operate light equipment such as a front‑end loader (≤1¼ cubic yard), pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
- Maintain highways and rights‑of‑way; perform roadway repairs; erect and repair guard rails, highway markers and signs; haul materials and equipment to job sites.
- Mow rights‑of‑way, picnic and rest areas; perform plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush.
- Inspect construction and routine contract maintenance methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
- Operate heavy equipment such as front‑end loader (≥1½ cubic yard), tractor‑trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper and dump truck.
- For Trans Maintenance Tech III: operate complex heavy equipment such as motor grader, large gradall, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self‑propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine.
- Roadway Maintenance Tech II: 1 year of experience in engineering support, maintenance, construction, heavy equipment operation or roadway maintenance work.
- Roadway Maintenance Tech III: 2 years of experience in engineering support, maintenance, construction, heavy equipment operation, roadway maintenance work or related experience.
- Experience can be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent; no supervisory experience required.
- Valid driver’s license; position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Must obtain a Commercial Class “A” CDL within 1 year of employment; professional training will be provided.
- Veterans/Military: must obtain Texas Class “A” CDL within 365 days of employment.
- Safety Impact position subject to random drug testing.
- Must pass a pre‑employment physical and drug test.
- Must be able to report for duty within 30 minutes of notification on a 24‑hour basis to respond to emergencies.
- Work with intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance methods, equipment and materials.
- Use applicable hand and power tools, equipment and mechanical devices of the trade.
- Operate light and heavy highway equipment.
- Work in cramped spaces and at varied heights.
- Prioritize and organize work assignments.
- Maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Follow verbal and written instructions.
