Controller - Remote But Must Be Based In The Bay Area For Occasional Team Meetings
Real estate investment company is seeking a hands-on Controller to join their tight knit team. The Controller position owns the accounting function while serving as a strategic partner to the CEO and executive team. The Controller oversees general ledger maintenance, month-end close, accounts payable and receivable, and entity-level reporting across the firm's corporate and property entities, in addition to supervising any junior staff.
The role also carries responsibility for cash management and projections, tax and insurance coordination, investor distribution processing, and payroll oversight. Externally, the Controller works closely with high-net-worth individuals, family offices, trusts, CPA firms, lenders, bankers, insurance brokers, and property management teams.
Responsibilities
- Direct the full accounting cycle across corporate and property entities, including ledger accuracy, payables, receivables, reconciliations, and timely close activities.
- Serve as a financial advisor to leadership by supporting budgets, forecasts, capital planning, and longer-range business decisions.
- Produce and coordinate quarterly and annual financial reporting, while partnering with internal and external stakeholders to align entity and asset-level results.
- Review monthly financial packages, including variance analysis and operating summaries, and provide clear insight into business performance.
- Oversee cash positioning, liquidity projections, payroll review, employee reimbursements, and monitoring of company credit card and recurring expense activity.
- Partner with third-party property managers to evaluate rent-related records, security deposit tracking, and property accounting deliverables for completeness and accuracy.
- Manage lender and transaction reporting by preparing supporting schedules, explanations, and due diligence materials as needed.
- Coordinate tax filings, audit support, insurance renewals, licensing compliance, and related documentation with external firms and brokers.
- Support investor activity by reviewing capital account information, validating distribution calculations, maintaining waterfall schedules, and coordinating distribution notices and reporting.
