Role Description The Custom Home Estimator is a full-time, on-site role based in San Mateo, CA. This position is responsible for preparing detailed cost estimates for custom home projects, including materials, labor, subcontractor work, and permitting fees. Day-to-day tasks include reviewing architectural and engineering plans, performing quantity takeoffs, requesting and evaluating subcontractor and supplier quotes, and updating estimate spreadsheets and software systems.

The estimator collaborates with project managers and leadership to refine budgets, identify cost-saving options, and support bid proposals. The role also involves participating in pre-construction meetings, maintaining organized records of estimates and assumptions, and assisting with revisions as plans or client requirements change.

Qualifications

• Ability to interpret architectural and engineering drawings and perform accurate quantity takeoffs.
• Proficiency with estimating or construction management software and standard office productivity tools.
• Strong analytical, numerical, and problem-solving skills for cost analysis and budget development.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills to collaborate with team members, clients, and subcontractors.
• Knowledge of residential construction methods, materials, and local building codes and permitting processes.
• High level of organization and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple estimates and deadlines.
• Previous experience in construction estimating, project coordination, or related field preferred.
• Associate or bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, or a related discipline is beneficial.
