Extra-Help Library Assistant – Bookmobile Driver Services

Apply to be part of an award-winning team at San Mateo County Libraries. The Bookmobile brings library services throughout San Mateo County, including coastal and inland communities, visiting schools and communities with a collection for children and adults in English and Spanish.

The Library Assistant will serve as the driver for a 35’ Bluebird Bus with seating for one passenger. The driver, along with one other Bookmobile staff member, will provide customer service at all stops and support special events, fairs and outreach activities. Because of the diversity of the communities served, bilingual language skills (Mandarin, Cantonese, or Spanish) are preferred. The position is part‑time and extra‑help;

hired employees generally work between 8 and 18 hours per week, covering day, evening, and weekend shifts.

The ideal candidate is enthusiastic, customer-service oriented, flexible, and effective in communicating with people from a variety of backgrounds. Experience working in a library, social services, youth development, education or early childhood settings is highly preferred. The following qualifications are required.

• Valid California Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Air Brake endorsement. Passenger endorsement is a plus.
• Available to work a schedule that includes a combination of day, evening and weekend shifts.
• Ability to inspire community members through friendly customer service and to promote library programs and services in the Bookmobile and throughout SMCL.
• Excellent communication skills, including cultural sensitivity and inclusivity.
• Independent judgment in applying library policies and procedures.
• Ability to adapt to a changing environment, initiate conversations, and market the library to the community.
• Proficiency in modern library services, internet skills, computer and technology use, basic math, and correct written and oral English usage.

• Library Assistant I:
  No specific education or experience required.
• Library Assistant II:
  One year of public contact and support experience in a library.
• All candidates must possess a current Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Air Brake endorsement; passenger endorsement is preferred.

Library Assistant I: $29.99–$33.51 hourly.

Library Assistant II: $31.64–$39.56 hourly.

This is an extra‑help, at‑will assignment, paid hourly. Extra‑help hours are dependent on business needs and may vary week to week. Employees shall not exceed 1,040 hours of work per fiscal year. While some extra‑help positions may be eligible for ACA benefits, no permanent status is guaranteed.
