Homework Central is a community-based educational nonprofit that provides after-school tutoring and family support to students in the San Mateo-Foster City School District. Five days a week, our staff and volunteers help elementary students strengthen their academic skills through homework support, small-group tutoring, and enrichment activities.
For more than two decades, Homework Central has helped students build confidence, achieve academic success, and develop a lifelong love of learning.
Position OverviewReports to:
Site Coordinator
The Site Assistant supports the daily operation of an after-school tutoring program by providing homework assistance, literacy support, and supervision for elementary students in grades 3–5. Working under the direction of the Site Coordinator, the Site Assistant helps create a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment where students can build confidence, complete homework, and strengthen academic skills.
This position is ideal for individuals interested in education, youth development, or community service and offers valuable experience working directly with elementary-age students.
Employment Type& Compensation
Part-Time, Non-Exempt
$18.60 to $19.00 per hour, based on experience, skills, and weekly availability.

August 11, 2026 – June 10, 2027, following the San Mateo‑Foster City School District school calendar (please review the Note below for additional calendar details, the program exception at Baywood Elementary School, and information on required HWC training)
- Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday: 3:00–6:00 p.m.
- Wednesday: 1:00–6:00 p.m.
Site Assistants are required to commit to a minimum of four days per week for the duration of the school year, with a five‑day-per‑week commitment preferred. Exact HWC program hours, schedules and weekly hours vary by school site based on program enrollment and staffing needs.
Responsibilities- Provide homework assistance and academic support in literacy and math for students in grades 3rd through 5th.
- Encourage student participation and foster a positive, supportive learning environment.
- Assist students with Chromebooks and other technology used during the program.
- Provide consistent supervision of students during tutoring, enrichment activities, recess breaks and meals, transitions, and dismissal.
- Assist with snack distribution and cleaning up.
- Help maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming classroom environment.
- Support classroom setup, cleanup, enrichment activities and other daily program activities.
- Work collaboratively with the Site Coordinator, staff, and volunteers to support successful program operations.
- Attend required staff meetings and professional development sessions.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the after‑school program.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Ability to commit to a minimum of four days per week for the duration of the school year.
- Reliable, punctual, and dependable.
- Positive attitude and enthusiasm for working with elementary‑age students.
- Ability to communicate effectively with children, families, volunteers, and staff.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
- Proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
- Department of Justice fingerprint clearance.
- Negative TB clearance.
- Ability to attend required training (or trainings) before and/or during the 2026‑27 SMFCSD school year.
- Will be required to abide by Homework Central rules and regulations by acknowledging in writing that they have reviewed HWC’s Employee Handbook.
- Will also be required to review and abide by Homework Central’s Site Manual through written acknowledgment.
- College students, recent high school graduates, or individuals interested in education, youth development, or community service are encouraged to apply.
- Experience working with elementary‑age children in a classroom, after‑school, camp, or youth program setting.
- Ability to commit to working 5 days per week throughout the school year is preferred.
- Spanish language skills are preferred.
