The Position

The City of San Mateo Parks & Recreation Department is looking for caring, enthusiastic, team-oriented, creative and energetic individuals to join our preschool team!

Are you seeking a meaningful opportunity to serve youth in a diverse, multicultural community? Join our team and make a positive difference every day. This position will oversee the daily operations of a toddler classroom, ensuring high-quality services and a welcoming environment for participants and their families. This role provides leadership and guidance to Preschool Specialist I and II’s, serving as a coach and mentor to support program success.

Teachers are dedicated to providing a safe environment for each child to grow emotionally, physically, socially, and intellectually and are committed to supporting families and children by following developmentally appropriate practices. This is a part-time position in the morning hours and is limited to 1,000 hours in a fiscal year.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate should be at least 18 years of age or possess a high school diploma or equivalent and preferably have at least one year of comparable work in a preschool classroom. A minimum of 12 Early Childhood Education Units are required. Candidates must demonstrate strong communication abilities, both verbal and written, which are essential, particularly when working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

This position requires working independently with direction provided from a Community Services Coordinator, as well as the capacity to train, supervise, and collaborate effectively with staff, youth participants and families. Attention to detail is critical, including maintaining accurate records and submitting required documentation promptly. Proficiency in basic computer applications, specifically Microsoft Word and Excel, is necessary. Availability is required Monday through Friday from August through June between the hours of 8:00am-12:30pm.

Duties
  • Collaborate with staff to plan and implement creative age-appropriate games, arts and crafts, songs, and science activities that coincide with our curriculum standards.
  • Lead Circle Time and Story times with participants.
  • Lead preschool staff on behavior management strategies, daily routines, incident/accident forms, activity implementation and best practices for working with preschool children.
  • Provide professional guidance and mentorship to subordinate staff.
  • Provide regular and clear feedback to participants' families regarding their child’s experience and progress.
  • Manage supplies and first aid equipment.
  • Support daily preschool operations, including sign-in/out procedures and safety practices.
  • Maintain accurate records of required documentation.
  • Support staff in following established safety procedures and program guidelines.
