Company Description The Highlands Recreation District operates the Highlands Recreation Center, a community-focused facility serving San Mateo, Burlingame, Belmont, San Carlos, Hillsborough, and neighboring cities on the San Francisco Peninsula. The center features a popular swimming pool known across the Bay Area for birthday parties and lessons. It offers summer camps and a variety of activities for children, along with wellness and enrichment classes for adults and older adults.

The district also provides indoor and outdoor venues for private events, fostering a welcoming environment for recreation, learning, and community connection.

Role Description The Director, Early Education Center is a full-time, on-site position based in San Mateo, CA. This role oversees the daily operations of the Early Education Center, including program planning, classroom scheduling, and coordination of age-appropriate curriculum and activities. The director supervises and supports teaching staff, ensures compliance with licensing and safety regulations, and maintains a positive, inclusive environment for children and families.

Responsibilities include managing budgets, enrollment, and reporting; building strong relationships with caregivers; and collaborating with other Highlands Recreation District programs to align services. The director also leads staff training, handles performance feedback, and continuously evaluates and improves program quality.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated leadership and management abilities in early childhood or education settings, including staff supervision and team development.
  • Strong organizational, planning, and time-management skills for coordinating multiple classes, schedules, and program initiatives.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for engaging children, families, staff, and community partners in a respectful, inclusive manner.
  • Knowledge of early childhood education principles, developmentally appropriate practices, and state/local licensing and safety regulations.
  • Ability to handle administrative tasks such as budgeting, enrollment, record-keeping, and reporting with accuracy and accountability.
  • Skill in building family and community relationships, including conflict resolution and providing responsive, customer-focused service.
  • Experience in program development and evaluation, including curriculum planning, quality improvement, and data-informed decision-making.
  • Relevant education such as a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Education, or a related field; advanced credentials are a plus.
  • Prior experience directing or coordinating an early learning center, preschool, or similar program is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to work on-site in San Mateo, CA and meet any required background checks, health clearances, and certifications (e.g., CPR/First Aid).
