San Mateo County Health is seeking a well-qualified individual for the position of Mobile Health Services Assistant – Spanish Speaking Preferred
. As a Mobile Health Services Assistant, you will drive and maintain mobile health vehicles, conduct initial intake/assessments at the scheduled stops, interview patients to obtain necessary information for registration and perform other duties related to patient assistance and supportive services. You will join a team of dedicated healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses and medical assistants, and work closely with the community to provide valuable services to our patients.

There is currently one regular, full‑time vacancy in the Public Health, Policy and Planning Division, serving both Mobile Clinics and Edison Clinic. The position is stationed in San Mateo, CA, but will regularly drive mobile health vehicles throughout the County. Clinics are run out of either the Edison stationary clinic, a mobile coach or sprinter van, complete with medical formularies. The 42‑foot mobile health coach requires a Class B license to operate.

This is a full‑time, 40‑hour‑per‑week position with work hours ranging from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., with flexibility for an alternative schedule on a consistent basis.

Responsibilities
  • Drive a mobile health van to locations according to the established schedule.
  • Conduct initial intake/assessment at scheduled location stops.
  • Interview patients to obtain necessary information for registration and billing; review personal, financial and insurance details with patients; explain available coverage plans and calculate treatment costs under selected plan.
  • Register patients for appropriate health services.
  • Provide assistance and supporting services to patients and clients.
  • Maintain records of all services provided on the mobile health van.
  • Input patient admitting, registration and/or billing information into the system following specific guidelines; retrieve data and prepare a variety of reports related to patient census, insurance and financial status.
  • Verify insurance program eligibility for emergency and hospital admissions.
  • Classify data on hospital and clinic documents and assign appropriate codes.
  • Respond to patient inquiries regarding County health care services, clinic policies and procedures; advise patients on available services, billing procedures, regulations and other related information.
  • Operate standard office equipment, including a personal or online computer.
  • Perform routine safety checks; identify needed vehicle maintenance and arrange for its completion.
  • Secure the mobile van in the established parking area at the end of the day.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Ideal candidate
  • A valid Class B California driver’s license and prior experience operating and maintaining a large vehicle preferred.
  • Ability to operate a 42‑foot vehicle.
  • Good driving record, free of moving violations.
  • Possession of current CPR (Basic Life Support).
  • A minimum of one year of office support experience that involved direct patient contact in a community outreach or clinical setting.
  • Knowledge of vehicle maintenance, routine and preventative.
  • Good communication skills, including exceptional customer service skills and the ability to work effectively in a close‑contact, team environment.
  • A positive, “can‑do” attitude.
  • Exceptional organizational skills.
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Ability to speak, read and write fluently in Spanish is preferred.
Qualifications Knowledge of
  • Traffic laws, ordinances and regulations governing safe operation of County‑owned motor vehicles.
  • Policies and procedures related to medical patient services, insurance and billing to which you are assigned.
  • Medical terminology as related to office support work.
  • Office practices and procedures, including filing, reception and the operation of standard office equipment.
  • Basic business data processing principles and the use of word processing or computing equipment.
  • Business arithmetic.
  • Basic record‑keeping principles and practices.
