We are seeking qualified and experienced Registered Nurses to work in our Medical‑Surgical unit at San Mateo Medical Center. The recruitment includes one full‑time (1.0 FTE) position and two part‑time (0.5 FTE each). A typical shift duration is 8 hours.
Position OverviewThe incumbent will provide professional nursing care for general medical‑surgical patients, including Telemetry, Oncology, and Pediatric units. Responsibilities include treating and educating patients, recording medical histories, performing diagnostic tests, operating medical machinery, administering medications, and assisting with patient follow‑up and rehabilitation.
Core Duties- Complete patient assessments and triage; record patient histories, symptoms and observations.
- Establish and implement nursing care plans for each patient through assessment, development, activation and evaluation.
- Participate in patient case conferences and rounds.
- Organize, assign and supervise duties of other staff members as a team leader; orient and teach new staff and students.
- Perform nursing care following prescribed rules, policies, protocol and procedures.
- Identify problems, assist in data gathering, propose solutions and participate in evaluation of quality assurance issues.
- Work with patients and families to provide in‑hospital and after‑hospital follow‑up through teaching and referral.
- Participate in educational programs to maintain level of expertise.
- Maintain records and prepare reports.
- Operate a variety of medical machinery and equipment.
- Administer treatment and medications.
- Maintain knowledge of outpatient resources.
- Develop discharge plans for patients.
- Perform related duties as assigned within the designated work setting.
- Provide hands‑on care to patients, practicing in an evidence‑based manner.
- Practice within the Scope of Practice of the California Nursing Practice Act, regulatory requirement, standards of care, and hospital policies.
- Perform all steps of the nursing process: assessment, interpretation of data, planning, implementation, evaluation, coordination with other providers, and patient/family education.
- Partner with patients’ families to deliver family‑centered care.
- Monitor the quality of nursing care provided.
- Take responsibility for professional development, including licensure and maintaining BLS, ACLS, and oncology nursing certifications.
- Contribute to the nursing profession through teaching and sharing expertise.
- Fluency in Spanish is preferred, but not required.
- Chemotherapy certification is preferred.
- Recent acute inpatient medical‑surgical experience for greater than one year is also preferred.
- Possession of a California license as a Registered Nurse (RN).
- Possession and maintenance of Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Possession and maintenance of Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
- Possession and maintenance of Oncology Nursing certification within three months of hire.
- Nurse Practice Act.
- Current nursing and related medical theory and skills necessary to administer nursing care within the assigned clinical setting.
- Safety and infection control practices.
- Clinical systems, supplies and equipment.
- Perform nursing procedures required for the assigned clinical setting.
- Comply with clinical procedures and policies.
- Maintain professional nurse‑patient relationships.
- Communicate and educate patients, families, and the public from diverse backgrounds.
- Work harmoniously with other personnel.
- Follow safety practices.
- Assist in instruction of other nursing and paraprofessional personnel.
- Perform physical tasks such as bending, kneeling, squatting, and lifting/pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds.
- Work effectively in a busy environment.
- Medical‑Surgical Nurse: $66.49 – $78.58 per hour ($5,319.20 – $6,286.40 biweekly; $11,524.71 – $13,620.27 monthly).
- Relief Nurse: $66.02 – $82.52 per hour ($5,281.60 – $6,601.60 biweekly; $11,443.47 – $14,303.47 monthly).
