Position: Nurse Practitioner (Open)

Position Overview

San Mateo County Health invites applicants for the Nurse Practitioner position. The role supports our clinical services across San Mateo County, including the Behavioral Health and Recovery Services (BHRS), Correctional Health Services, Public Health Policy and Planning, and the San Mateo Medical Center and Clinics.

Duties
  • Assess patients’ health by taking medical histories, performing physical examinations, and initiating screening and diagnostic procedures.
  • Interpret clinical findings and laboratory results; report abnormalities to a physician.
  • Identify and manage common illnesses and health problems in collaboration with physicians, and refer cases requiring immediate medical attention.
  • Collaborate with physicians and health professionals on diagnosis and treatment plans per established protocols.
  • Provide counseling to patients and families on health maintenance related to the area of specialization.
  • Coordinate referrals to other health or social agencies.
  • Maintain accurate assessment, follow‑up, and evaluation records.
  • Supervise subordinate health workers and participate in professional and administrative meetings.
  • Participate proactively in quality improvement processes within the work area.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Education: Completion of an advanced nursing degree accredited by CCNE or NLNAC with emphasis in a Nurse Practitioner specialty area.
  • Experience: Minimum one year of paid experience in acute and/or ambulatory care; alternatives include 200 direct preceptorship hours at San Mateo Medical Center or 400 hours at a comparable FQHC, or five years of OB/GYN RN experience for OB/GYN assignments.
  • Knowledge: Principles and procedures for detection, diagnosis, and treatment of common health problems; fundamentals of clinical medicine; pharmacology of common drugs; safety and infection control; laboratory test interpretation; operation of medical equipment; applicable laws and regulations; community resources;
    Nurse Practice Act provisions.
  • Skills: Patient assessment, history taking, physical examination, management of common health problems, treatment planning, data analysis, effective communication, relationship building, safety compliance, accurate documentation, and report preparation.
Licensure & Certification
  • California Registered Nurse license.
  • California Board of Registered Nursing Nurse Practitioner License.
  • California Board of Registered Nursing Furnishing Number.
  • DEA Number.
  • Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • For OB/GYN roles, a Nurse Midwife license and at least one women’s health specialty certification may substitute the Nurse Practitioner license.
Special Certification Requirements
  • Pediatric – primary care for patients 17 years and under.
  • Family – primary care for patients of all ages.
  • Geriatric – primary care for older patients.
  • OB/GYN – women’s health or primary care for obstetric and gynecologic patients.
