Summary

Provides daily supervision and hands‑on support for Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs). Supervises and directs the day‑to‑day operation of the Spay/Neuter Clinic, acting as the primary supervisor and ensuring the clinic runs efficiently and all assigned surgeries and duties are performed daily. Participates in daily responsibilities of the clinic, including performing Registered Veterinary Technician duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ensure that all animals in the clinic receive a thorough health evaluation and proper vaccinations.
  • Implement protocols, procedures, medical evaluations, and treatment of animals as set by PHS/SPCA.
  • Create monthly schedules for RVTs, including training and vacation; always ensure adequate staffing levels.
  • Create and assign daily work assignments for all department RVTs.
  • Oversee and participate in the training of new RVTs, covering proper cleaning, feeding procedures, animal handling, euthanasia, surgical preparation, screening, health checks, medical and technical duties, monitoring, recovery, and customer service.
  • Partner with the department manager, director, and divisional vice president to address operational, customer service, or employment issues.
  • Coordinate daily surgeries and clinic duties, directing staff to use time efficiently.
  • Perform initial physical exams on clients’ animals; restrain animals for exams and/or treatment.
  • Calculate and prepare medications for patients; draw pre‑anesthetic/anesthetic drugs before surgery.
  • Induce and maintain animals under anesthesia, monitoring them throughout. Assist the veterinarian during surgery.
  • Perform admitting and discharge duties for public and shelter animals.
  • Maintain controlled substances log for the Spay & Neuter Clinic.
  • Prepare patients for surgery, including sterilization and pre‑surgical injections.
  • Assist veterinarians in surgery as needed.
  • Maintain proper paperwork and medical records as required by law.
  • Maintain department equipment in good working order; report items for repair or replacement as needed.
  • Perform inventory and ensure supplies are stocked appropriately.
  • Perform laboratory procedures, including usage of a microscope, blood and dental machines, as necessary.
  • Initiate emergency medical practices as needed.
  • Provide humane care and treatment of all sheltered animals.
  • Assist with euthanasia of animals in accordance with PHS/SPCA policies; limit euthanasia to animals in the clinic that may be euthanized under anesthesia due to unforeseen medical conditions.
  • Maintain a clean and sanitary work area in all work spaces; ensure timely cleaning each day.
  • Assume responsibility for the clinic’s HQ software and any system updates.
  • Serve as the initial point of contact for client complaints and concerns.
  • Provide care and medical treatments for animals housed at the shelter when time permits and the clinic is closed; assist shelter veterinarians as needed.
Supervisory Responsibilities

In consultation with the department manager, coach, counsel, and take corrective action with employees as needed. Supervise Registered Veterinary Technicians, Veterinary Assistants, and volunteers in the Spay & Neuter Clinic, carrying out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

Qualifications
  • Registered Veterinary Technician certification/licensure from an accredited program is required.
  • Ability to manage the emotional aspect of end‑of‑life services and humane euthanasia, and support staff in high‑emotion circumstances.
  • Must pass a background check upon hire.
  • Organized; able to direct other staff.
