Position: Project Accountant / Job Cost Accountant

Duration: Temp-to-Hire

Location: San Rafael, CA

Pay Rate: $37-$42/hour

Our client is seeking a detail-oriented Project Accountant / Job Cost Accountant to join their growing team in San Rafael. This is an excellent temp-to-hire opportunity for an accounting professional with strong project accounting, job costing, and construction or project-based industry experience. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced environment, possess strong analytical skills, and enjoy partnering with operations teams to ensure accurate project financial reporting.

• Manage project accounting activities from project setup through closeout.
• Monitor and maintain project budgets, costs, commitments, and billing activities.
• Track and analyze job costs, labor, materials, subcontractor expenses, and overhead allocations.
• Prepare and review project-related invoices, progress billings, and change orders.
• Reconcile project accounts and ensure accuracy of project financial data.
• Assist with month-end close, journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial reporting.
• Collaborate with project managers to review project performance and profitability.
• Investigate cost variances and provide recommendations for improving financial controls.
• Support audits and maintain proper project documentation.
• Ensure compliance with company policies and accounting procedures.

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field preferred.
• 3+ years of project accounting and/or job cost accounting experience.
• Experience in construction, engineering, real estate development, or other project-based industries strongly preferred.
• Strong understanding of project costing, WIP schedules, billing processes, and revenue recognition.
• Proficient in Excel, including Pivot Tables and VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP functions.
• Experience with ERP or project accounting systems preferred.
• Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to meet deadlines.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
