We have two full‑time, regular hire vacancies for civil engineering positions at the County of Marin:
Department of Public Works:Engineering Division – Civil Engineer
Under the direction of a Senior Civil Engineer, the Civil Engineer defines, designs, and/or reviews minor projects and phases of large civil engineering projects. Projects include bridge repair and replacement, culvert repair and replacement, new retaining walls, roadway maintenance, stormwater management devices, and traffic management devices. This position exercises substantial initiative, judgment, and expertise, and may involve selecting consultants, preparing contract documents, administering contracts during construction, and providing direction and mentorship to junior staff.

Building & Safety Division – Structural Civil Engineer
The Structural Civil Engineer reviews structural plans, calculations, and construction documents to ensure compliance with local and state codes. The role focuses on codes such as the California Building Standards Code, ASCE 7, AISC Steel Construction Manual, ACI 318‑19, and NDS for Wood Construction. The engineer works independently, collaborates with building plans examiners and other departments, and ensures construction documents are accurate, clear, and regulatory‑compliant.
Compensation& Benefits
- Salary range: $62.35 – $75.80 hourly.
- Job‑related license differential of 2.0% already included in the posted salary.
- Eligible for overtime with prior approval.
- Signing bonus of $10,000, split 50/50 between hire and completion of probation.
- Hybrid work schedule with some duties performed remotely; onsite presence required during the probationary period and as needed for meetings or disaster service work.
- Estimated equity adjustment pending Board approval in 2026.
- Registered Civil Engineer issued by the California State Board of Registration for Civil and Professional Engineers.
- At least three (3) years of increasingly responsible engineering experience.
- Knowledge and experience in: pavement management, drainage, stormwater, geotechnical principles, public project bidding, construction principles, and AutoCAD (desirable).
- Ability to prepare and review project scopes, bid documents, budgets, and complex technical reports.
- Strong analytical, oral, and written communication skills; proficiency in contract negotiation and staff supervision.
- For Structural Civil Engineer: comprehensive understanding of building codes, structural analysis, and design principles.
- For Civil Engineer: experience with road and bridge projects, flood control structures, survey techniques, and transportation engineering principles (as required).
