Under the general direction of the Supervising Transportation Engineer and Construction Manager, the incumbent functions as Construction Engineer to administer the Construction Program within an area or corridor. The Construction Engineer acts as a first‑line supervisor to have charge of varied and difficult transportation engineering work in the field or office, involving the supervision of engineers and others engaged in transportation development activities.

Projects may range from one million to billions of dollars.

• Professional Engineer License.
• Valid driver’s license required when operating a state‑owned or leased vehicle.
• Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) required. Failure to submit will disqualify candidates.

• Describe why your knowledge, skills, and experience make you the best candidate for the Construction Engineer, including specific job‑related experience and your approach to motivating employees.
• Describe your experience working with local transportation agencies, permitting agencies, and other external and internal stakeholders, with specific examples.
• List top concerns for supervising a field construction office and how you will address them as a Senior Transportation Engineer.

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Senior Transportation Engineer, Caltrans exam. New to state candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or the minimum of an alternate range when applicable. Candidates without current eligibility must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions.
