Marin County Detention Health Services provides comprehensive healthcare to individuals incarcerated in the County’s adult and juvenile detention facilities. Operated under the Division of Public Health within the Department of Health and Human Services, Detention Health Services functions as a dedicated healthcare delivery system serving a unique and essential population. Under the supervision of the Nursing Services Manager, the Detention Registered Nurse (DRN) plays a key role in delivering medical care to adult inmates at the County jail.

• Screening and assessing detainees for medical clearance and facility acceptance
• Conducting health intake assessments
• Planning, coordinating, and evaluating nursing care and treatment plans
• Administering medications
• Triaging sick call complaints
• Providing first aid and immunizations
• Collecting laboratory specimens and maintaining medical supplies
• Documenting and maintaining accurate clinical and inmate records

The DRN works closely with a multidisciplinary team, including Social Services and Behavioral Health professionals, Juvenile Hall custody staff, Probation Officers, and Sheriff’s Office personnel to ensure holistic and coordinated care.

The highly qualified candidate has experience working in a high security environment such as, correctional facilities, prisons, or detention health services. The DRN is able to manage complex relationships and collaborate as a member of an interdisciplinary team. Our highly qualified candidate has resiliency to work in a stressful and sometimes chaotic environment, excellent judgment and decision-making skills, and effective written and oral communication skills.

The DRN understands the psychological factors affecting nursing care within a detention facility and has the skills in performing physical and psycho-social nursing assessments. The candidate has demonstrated proficiency utilizing an electronic medical record system to document medication delivery and patient treatment information, is proficient with MS Office (e.g., email, internet, Word) and databases, and adept to learning new programs.

• Principles and techniques of drug administration, and uses and effects of medications.
• Principles, practices and techniques of safety and infection control.
• Laws, rules and regulations governing the practice of nursing.
• Security issues and challenges of care delivery within a correctional institution.
• Community medical and social agencies and resources.
• Environmental, sociological and psychological problems affecting nursing care within a detention facility.
• Child and elder abuse and neglect and domestic violence reporting laws.

• Exercise security precautions and safety procedures.
• Perform physical and psycho-social nursing assessments and develop and implement patient care plans and/or referrals.
• Administer medications and perform skilled nursing treatments and procedures in a high-security setting for dysfunctional, stressed and/or uncooperative patients.
• Apply teaching principles and provide education and counseling.
• Exercise sound independent judgment within scope of authority and practice.
