Overview

The Assistant Chief Nursing Officer (ACNO) supports the Chief Nursing Officer in planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing services to ensure delivery of adequate and competent patient care. In the absence of the CNO, the ACNO has responsibility for Nursing Supervisors, Nursing Directors, and Clinical Education. The ACNO functions as an expert nurse who facilitates the development of nursing areas.

Responsibilities
  • Facilitates mechanisms designed to guide the provision of nursing care required for all patients.
  • Participates in the design and development of systems compatible with the ANA Code of Ethics, nursing standards, organizational goals, resources, and changing needs and expectations of patients and families.
  • Assists CNO with developing, maintaining, and evaluating organizational planning systems to facilitate delivery of patient care services.
  • Assists with developing standards of nursing practice and standards of care with nursing leaders.
  • Advocates for processes that enable creative, client-centered, cost-effective outcomes.
  • Promotes integration of contemporary management theories, nursing research, and practice standards into planning.
  • Supports staff in developing and maintaining competency in planning and managing transitions.
  • Advocates integration of policies into action plans to achieve client-centered outcomes.
  • Uses clinical, human resource, and financial data to align nursing standards and patient care across the continuum.
  • Ensures CNO is informed of critical departmental issues; keeps managers and staff informed on organizational issues and collaborates with departments potentially impacted by nursing changes.
  • Provides training and coaching for managers and staff in candidate selection; adheres to policies and utilizes resources for operations.
  • Provides leadership in professional, community, and governmental bodies shaping healthcare policy.
  • Provides leadership in identifying clinical nursing goals and directions; collaborates with nursing leaders to implement systems and processes to reach clinical and administrative goals.
  • Evaluates and revises nursing service systems and processes to achieve client/family-centered outcomes.
  • Provides leadership in critical thinking, conflict management, and problem solving; supports ongoing evaluation and innovation of nursing services.
  • Supports research dissemination and utilization in nursing, health, and management.
  • Serves as a professional role model and mentor to motivate, develop, recruit, and retain staff and future nurse administrators; collaborates with recruiters on recruitment and retention strategies.
  • Leads departmental and cross-functional transitions; applies best practices, removes barriers, gains organizational support for change.
  • Promotes harmonious relationships among staff, medical staff, patients, and others; evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice and administration; supports performance improvement programs.
  • Identifies key quality indicators and participates in peer review and privileging processes for advanced practice nurses/Allied Health Professionals; participates in interdisciplinary evaluation teams.
  • Maintains knowledge of JCAHO Standards, state and federal regulations, and ANA standards for nurse administrators; ensures staff operate within legal boundaries of nursing practice.
  • Ensures staff awareness of current standards, policies, and procedures; visits nursing units to assess patient care quality and staff satisfaction; self-assesses performance against professional standards and organizational criteria.
  • Seeks feedback and acts to improve performance; maintains current administrative knowledge and expands skills; networks with peers to share ideas and solve problems; maintains professional affiliations and growth; collaborates with nursing and other disciplines on program development and evaluation.
