Job Details

Position: Special Education Paraprofessional (Severe to Profound)
Contract: 7.5 hrs. daily, plus 10% stipend off base pay
Reports to: Assigned Special Education Teacher, Building Principal, Director of Special Services
Classification: Exempt

Qualifications

• 48 hours of college credit OR passing score on Paraprofessional Test

• High school diploma or equivalent

• Completion of paraprofessional training required by OSDE CPI, CPR and First Aid Certificate, Tiered Certification as specified by OSDE

• National criminal history check approved by OSDE/OSBI

• Holding a GED diploma, and PLUS:

  • Option A:
    Associate’s degree (or higher) OR
  • Option B:
    Complete at least 48 credit hours of study at an institution of higher education OR
  • Option C:
    Pass Oklahoma General Education (OGET) Test
  • Option D:
    Pass Praxis Para Professional Assessment Test (passing score 455)
  • Pass an Oklahoma criminal background check
  • Apply for Oklahoma Title I Paraprofessional Credential
  • Submit a $10 processing fee (check, cashier’s check, or money order) payable to Oklahoma State Department of Education (required if hired)
  • Additional requirements apply for special education paraprofessionals
Job Goal

Provides adult support to small groups of students or one‑on‑one with an individual student to assist in unique educational goals.

Evaluation

Annual evaluation by the supervising teacher and the site principal.

Physical and Job Demands

Regular Requirements: stand, walk, twist neck and trunk, bend, reach, use fingers, lift/move up to 50 lb.

Occasional Requirements: lift/move up to 50 lb.

Visual Requirements: clear, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception; ability to adjust focus.

Hearing/Speaking Requirements: adequate to exchange information.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist with instruction, errands, copies related to assigned student(s).
  • Cleans and maintains an efficient work area.
  • Attends IEP and other meetings and training as requested.
  • Alerts assigned teacher of concerns related to student(s).
  • Maintains confidentiality of student information.
  • Complies with all federal, state, and local laws and board policies.
  • Uses professional behavior in all school-related interactions.
  • Assists teacher in monitoring students’ progress toward academic and behavioral IEP goals.
  • Reinforces learning in small groups or with an individual student while teacher works with other students.
  • Assists teacher in observing, recording, and charting behavior.
  • Assists teacher with crisis problems and behavior management.
  • Provides one‑on‑one tutoring when scheduled.
  • Scores objective tests and papers, maintains appropriate records for teachers.
  • Carries out instructional programs designed by the teacher.
  • Works with teacher to develop classroom schedules.
  • Operates and maintains classroom equipment.
  • Supervises children in hallway, lunchroom, and playground.
  • Performs other tasks as supervisor assigns.
  • Accompanies students to cafeteria, assists with meals and cleanup.
  • Accompanies students to classes or therapy services, monitors behavior, assists with classwork.
  • Assists students with motor, balance, social, and life skills.
  • Assists students with personal care, dressing, toileting, diapering.
