JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for operating equipment in the maintenance of city streets and related infrastructure.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Performs pre- and post-trip vehicle and equipment inspections.
• Subject to call back 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
• Transports equipment, supplies and materials, including sand, gravel, rock, supplies, etc.
• Assist with installing and maintaining work zone traffic control devices, and obtains GDOT certified flagger qualification.
• Position involves operating pickup trucks, tractors and various small equipment including weed eaters, chain saws and edgers.
• Ability to operate heavy equipment in the maintenance and repair of city streets, right-of-ways, and related infrastructure including kncleboom truck, backhoe, tractor used in bush hog or aerial mowing operations used in public works operations.
• Assist with projects, including building demolitions, site clean ups, storm drainage maintenance, traffic sign installations and general construction.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

• Knowledge of city and departmental policies and procedures.
• Knowledge and skill to operate various machinery and equipment including a pick up trucks & tractors.
• Ability to use independent judgment in routine and non-routine situations.
• Skill in communicating with public and city staff, following directions and completing assigned work.
• Skill in the use of hand and power tools.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Street Construction Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include the employee handbook, city and department policies and procedures, safety procedures, and traffic laws. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

• The work consists of related equipment operation and maintenance duties. Inclement weather and heavy traffic contribute to the complexity of the position.
• The purpose of this position is to operate equipment in the maintenance of city streets and related infrastructure. Successful performance contributes to well-maintained city streets.

• Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, vendors, and the general public.
• Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

• The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light objects and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
• The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, inclement weather, and machinery with moving parts and hot, cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Minimum one year experience operating heavy equipment.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid commercial driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
