HX5 is currently seeking a Research Mechanic III to join our team in Sandusky, Ohio in support of the Test Facilities Operation, Maintenance and Engineering (TFOME) contract at NASA Neil Armstrong Test Facility. The TFOME team at the NASA Glenn Research Center provides engineering and technical services in the aeronautics, space power and propulsion test facilities.
Responsibilities- Operate facility overhead crane, man‑lifts, forks, portable cranes; provide rigging for lifting equipment and material using lifting straps, chain hoists, and other lifting devices.
- Weld horizontally, overhead, and vertically using oxy‑acetylene, AC‑DC electric arc, MIG, and TIG on materials such as stainless steel, carbon steel, aluminum, copper, brass, etc.
- Operate machine tools such as drill press, power hacksaw, band saw, shears, pipe threaders, brakes, rollers, lathes, mills, and grinders; operate small power tools including air wrenches, drills, grinders, etc.
- Lay out and build complex tubing systems using flaring machines and tubing benders.
- Disassemble, remove, repair, reassemble, and verify various types of valves and pressure regulators; ensure hardware materials are compatible with flow media properties including pressure and temperature.
- Operate hydraulic systems, high‑pressure gas systems including gas tubers, pressure reduction stations, pressure pumps, and seals.
- Work with and possess a basic understanding of environmental test chambers, mass spectrometer leak detectors, and vacuum systems.
- Assist in the installation and operation of intricate research test packages in various test facilities.
- Fabricate, install, operate, and maintain mechanical control test panels and special test equipment; operate, maintain, and calibrate leak detection systems.
- Perform general maintenance on mechanical vacuum pumping equipment, diffusion pumps, cryo‑pumps, steam ejector systems, head exchangers, and cryogenic systems.
- Perform inspection and evaluation of mechanical equipment and facility operation systems; make recommendations related to maintenance and repair of the dame.
- Fabricate, install, and operate cryogenic systems including liquid hydrogen, liquid nitrogen, or liquid helium.
- Minimum of four (4) years working experience as a Journeyman Mechanic such as Maintenance Mechanic or Machine Repair Technician.
- Journeyperson certificate in Research Laboratory Mechanic skills, or equivalent vocational school training with sufficient combined work experience and skills in another mechanical trade, or an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Engineering Technology.
- Capability to read mechanical prints and drawings, and use computers for touch‑screen operations for daily reporting activities.
- Good attention to detail and ability to follow verbal and written instructions from engineering or supervision.
- Working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of research test facilities and associated equipment.
- Ability to use own judgement and decisions to allow continuity of workflow.
- Ability to organize time and assignments to properly prioritize efforts for maximum effectiveness.
- Self‑motivated and team player with good interpersonal and communication skills.
