Power Systems Engineer
The Power Systems Engineer designs, integrates, and supports complex electrical power, controls, instrumentation, and data acquisition systems for advanced test facilities and test rigs. This role provides technical leadership in the development, implementation, and maintenance of PLC-based control systems and PC/Unix-based data acquisition networks, ensuring reliable operation of critical test infrastructure that supports major spaceflight missions.
Responsibilities:
- Design, integrate, and support electrical power, controls, instrumentation, and data acquisition systems for test facilities and test rigs.
- Develop and implement PLC-based control systems, including specification and integration of sensors, instrumentation, and signal conditioning hardware.
- Program, configure, troubleshoot, and maintain PC and Unix systems, data acquisition systems, and TCP/IP communication networks used in test operations.
- Provide technical leadership for installation, calibration, checkout, troubleshooting, and operation of electrical and control systems, working closely with technicians and electricians.
- Create and maintain detailed schematics, drawings, procedures, calibration records, and ISO 9001 documentation to support system design, maintenance, and audits.
- Participate in design reviews and safety reviews to ensure compliance with engineering standards, safety regulations, and best practices.
- Support day-to-day test operations by ensuring electrical and control systems are configured, calibrated, and functioning reliably for scheduled tests.
- Lead and support system upgrades and modifications, including power distribution and control system enhancements, to improve performance and reliability.
- Contribute to procurement activities by defining technical requirements, reviewing vendor proposals, and supporting equipment selection for electrical and control systems.
- Provide training and technical guidance to operations personnel, technicians, and electricians on system operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance procedures.
- Perform specialized engineering analyses related to electrical power systems, controls, instrumentation, and data acquisition to support mission and facility objectives.
Skills &
Qualifications:
- BS degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
- At least 5 years of experience working with electrical, electronic, control, instrumentation, or data acquisition systems.
- Hands-on experience with PLCs, PLC programming, and control system integration.
- Experience with electrical power distribution systems and power system design, including distribution up to 480 VAC.
- Proficiency in instrumentation and sensor integration, including signal conditioning and measurement devices.
- Ability to design and integrate control systems for complex test facilities and equipment.
- Experience with data acquisition systems and PC/Unix-based control and monitoring platforms.
- Working knowledge of C++, FORTRAN, AutoCAD, MathCAD, SPICE, and MS Office.
- Familiarity with NEC, OSHA safety standards, ISA standards, and hazardous area classifications.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
Nice to Have:
- Experience in electrical design for test facilities or industrial environments.
- Experience in cryogenic systems and their associated sensors and measurement devices.
- Experience maintaining documentation within ISO 9001 quality frameworks.
- Ability to interpret and produce detailed electrical schematics and engineering drawings.
- Comfort working across multiple buildings and specialized facilities within a large technical campus.
- Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership and mentoring to technicians and electricians.
- Interest in supporting long-term spaceflight and propulsion testing programs, including mission-critical infrastructure upgrades.
