Nature of Work, Essential Functions & KSA's
Under the immediate supervision of the Division Supervisor and under the general supervision of the Utilities Field Superintendent, performs semi-skilled and skilled labor in the maintenance, inspection, construction, repair and service work of the City's utility services including water distribution, sanitary sewer collection and storm water collection systems. May be assigned to any division within the Public Utilities Department as a substitute for individuals on vacation, sick leave, etc.,

or during heavy workload periods. This position is subject to emergency callouts and must be able to work both scheduled and unscheduled overtime, including nights, weekends and stand-by, as required.

Position will be filled as a Technician I, Technician II or Technician III, dependent upon the needs of the department and qualifications/experience of the preferred candidate.

Essential Functions

Technician I (entry level)
  • Assists crew in and learns to perform assigned semi-skilled and manual sanitary sewer and storm sewer systems construction and maintenance tasks on a daily basis.
  • Learns to operate division's motorized construction and maintenance equipment on a regular basis, which may include and is not limited to skid steers (including attachments), backhoe, grader, front-end loader, rollers, compaction equipment (jumping jack, vibratory plate), dump truck and hydraulic sewer cleaning machine, CCTV inspection equipment, and emergency generator operation.
  • Performs general maintenance duties such as infrastructure OUPS locates, lift station readings, asphalt and concrete surface restoration, and vehicle maintenance as instructed.
  • Assists in and learns to perform construction, maintenance and repair of sanitary sewer and storm sewer collection systems, lift station operation and their accessories (i.e., valves, lift station pumps and controls).
  • Responds to customer service requests as directed.
  • Technician II (proficient technician)
  • Performs installation, maintenance, inspection and repair work on sanitary sewer and storm sewer collection and treatment systems, including gravity mains, force mains, service connections, and lift station pumps and controls.
  • Skillfully operates a variety of equipment, machinery and tools used in department projects and activities on a regular basis, which may include and is not limited to skid steers (including attachments), backhoe, grader, front-end loader, rollers, compaction equipment (jumping jack, vibratory plate), dump truck and hydraulic sewer cleaning machine, CCTV inspection equipment, and emergency generator operation.
  • Performs technical duties locating and marking underground city utilities using a variety of utility maps, as-built plans, blueprints, sketches, construction plans, GIS systems and other computer mapping systems as needed.
  • Notifies residents and businesses of work being performed; responds to questions or complaints, or request for service, initiates problem resolution.
  • Technician III (advanced technician)
  • Provides job-site supervision of crews performing construction and maintenance activities; prioritizes work and determines what equipment and materials are needed to accomplish work assignments; and coordinates with other city departments (as necessary) and executes the department's preventative maintenance procedures and schedules.
  • Reviews and inspects the work of assigned crew to assure work quality and timely completion of assigned duties and responsibilities.
