Job Overview

Under general supervision of the pool manager, monitors activities in swimming areas to prevent accidents and provide assistance to swimmers; cautions swimmers regarding unsafe areas; rescues swimmers in danger of drowning and administers first aid; maintains order in swimming areas; inspects facilities for cleanliness; may give swimming instructions.

• Monitors pool activities of patrons to prevent injuries and save lives (enforces rules and regulations, etc.).
• Inspects and ensures readiness of safety equipment.
• Inspects pool area for cleanliness and cleans as necessary.
• Performs various tasks to ensure efficient delivery of services (accepts money and admits patrons, completes custodial or maintenance assignments, etc.).
• Performs any and all other duties as directed by the pool manager or authorized representative to ensure effective operation of the village swimming pool.
• Follows all pool safety practices and procedures.
• Maintains required licensures and certification.
• Meets all job safety requirements and applicable OSHA safety standards.
• Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

• Completion of or actively working toward completion of secondary education with training in water safety instruction.

• Must possess current lifeguard training certificate, first aid, and CPR certificates.

• Lifesaving flotation devices, whistle.

Employee ascends and/or descends ladders, stairs, or scaffolds; is exposed to possible injury as a result of falling from high places; works in or around crowds; has contact with potentially violent or emotionally distraught persons; has exposure to life threatening situations; has exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy weather conditions; lifts up to 75 pounds and moves a distance of 50 feet;

may on rare occasions be required to assist in lifting persons of varying weights. In accordance with the U.S. Department of Labor physical demands strength ratings, this is considered medium work. In cases of emergency, unpredictable situations, and/or department needs, may be required to lift, push, pull, and/or carry objects heavier than D.O.L. strength ratings recommend.

• Knowledge of department policies and procedures; pool rules and regulations; water safety policies and procedures; workplace safety practices and procedures; life saving techniques; first aid practices; CPR; sanitary practices; public relations.
• Skill in executing life saving techniques; administering first aid and CPR.
• Ability to interpret policies, rules, and regulations; communicate effectively; develop and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and the public; follow simple instructions; complete routine custodial/maintenance tasks; calculate numbers; prepare routine work records; work safely; exhibit and maintain satisfactory work ethics and public relations.
