Join our substitute teaching team and enjoy flexible, meaningful work with children in a supportive Montessori school community.

Sandwich Montessori School is looking for reliable, caring Substitute Teachers who can step into our classrooms when regular staff members are absent. Substitutes help maintain a calm, safe, and engaging environment while following the established routines and plans of the classroom.

Montessori experience is not required. We are looking for people who genuinely enjoy working with children, are dependable, and can confidently support a classroom team.

This position is a great fit for educators, retired teachers, college students, childcare professionals, or others with experience working with children who are looking for flexible, as-needed work.

Substitutes may be contacted for planned teacher absences as well as occasional last-minute coverage. You do not need to be available every day.

• Step into an established classroom and follow the teacher's daily plans and routines
• Work directly with children throughout the school day
• Support children's independence, engagement, and positive interactions
• Help maintain a calm, safe, and organized classroom environment
• Assist with classroom activities, transitions, outdoor time, meals, rest, and other daily routines
• Model respectful and appropriate interactions with children
• Collaborate with teachers and other members of the classroom team
• Follow school policies and health and safety procedures

• Arrives on time, prepared, and ready to step into the classroom
• Maintains a calm, steady presence with children, even during busy or challenging moments
• Follows the established classroom schedule, routines, and expectations
• Engages actively with children rather than simply supervising from the sidelines
• Supports children's independence while stepping in appropriately when help is needed
• Responds respectfully and consistently to children's behavioral and emotional needs
• Communicates clearly with the classroom team and asks questions when needed
• Adapts comfortably to different classrooms, age groups, teachers, and daily needs
• Helps leave the classroom organized and ready for the returning teacher
• Demonstrates reliability, professionalism, and respect for the children, staff, and school community

• Calm, patient, and comfortable working with young children
• Dependable and punctual
• Flexible and able to adapt to different classrooms and age groups
• Comfortable following an established classroom routine
• Attentive to children's safety and individual needs
• Kind and respectful with children and adults
• Professional and collaborative
• Willing to learn about Montessori practices and classroom expectations

• Experience working with children in a school, childcare, camp, coaching, tutoring, youth program, or similar setting
• Strong communication skills and a professional, team-oriented attitude
• The ability to follow classroom routines and teacher directions
• A genuine interest in working with children
• Massachusetts EEC certification is preferred but not required.
• Prior Montessori experience is a plus, but not required.

$19–$23 per hour, based on experience and qualifications.
