Position: Test Engineer/ Technician

Electrical Substation / Power Plant Test Engineer or Technician

Location: Georgia, (Or Surrounding States)

Employment Type: Permanent, Full-Time

Travel: Projects throughout Georgia

Compensation: Approximately $75-$90 per hour, depending on experience

Additional Compensation: Overtime and approximately $151 per day in per diem when traveling

Grid Careers is recruiting an experienced Electrical Test Engineer or Technician for a Georgia-based electrical testing and commissioning company. This person will support testing, maintenance, troubleshooting and commissioning projects at high-voltage substations and power plants throughout Georgia.

This is a hands-on field position for someone with experience testing protective relays, control systems and high-voltage electrical equipment. Candidates may live anywhere in Georgia, Alabama or South Carolina if they are comfortable traveling to project sites throughout Georgia.

Responsibilities

  • Test, maintain and commission electromechanical and microprocessor protective relays
  • Perform testing and troubleshooting on substation and power-plant electrical systems
  • Test transformers, breakers, switch gear, batteries and AC/DC control circuits
  • Perform primary and secondary injection testing using equipment such as Omicron, Doble, Megger or similar systems
  • Read and interpret one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, schematics, DC control drawings and wiring diagrams
  • Troubleshoot relay schemes, wiring problems and equipment failures
  • Assist with power-line-carrier equipment, including RFL, Power Comm, Pulsar or Trench systems
  • Develop or follow test procedures, commissioning plans and switching procedures
  • Document test results and communicate findings to customers and project leadership
  • Safely coordinate field activities without interrupting critical utility or power-plant operations
  • Travel between project sites throughout Georgia

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree, bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Hands-on experience testing or commissioning high-voltage substations, power plants or utility electrical systems
  • Experience with protective relays and protection-and-control systems
  • Ability to read electrical drawings, schematics and wiring diagrams
  • Experience using relay or electrical test equipment such as Omicron, Doble or Megger
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and contribute as part of a field team
  • Willingness to travel throughout Georgia
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record

Preferred Experience

  • Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology degree
  • Senior-level or lead field-testing experience
  • Electromechanical and microprocessor relay testing
  • SEL, GE, ABB, Siemens or Basler protective relays
  • Power-line-carrier testing and troubleshooting
  • Substation commissioning, switching, LOTO and energized-facility experience
