The Role Senior Mechanical Technician Position Summary

We are looking for a resilient, high-energy, experienced Senior Mechanical Technician who will primarily be responsible for the assembly and test of electrical hardware from the developmental stages through flight for the Lunar Terrain Vehicle (LTV) Program. This position interfaces with employees and government agencies and reports to the AxEVA Production Lead. This role is onsite and will be based at our Gemini facility located in Webster, TX.

Employment in this role is contingent on Astrolab/Axiom being selected as a winner of NASA's LTVS contract.

Key

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Read and accurately interpret engineering models, blueprints, wiring diagrams, assembly prints, and schematics.
  • Mentor less experienced technicians.
  • Operate machines and/or use hand tools and power tools.
  • Set up and operate a wide range of precision calibrated tools such as torque wrenches, micrometers, calipers, depth gauges and optical measuring instruments.
  • Stage, assemble, install, and inspect spacecraft mechanical, electrical, and fluid components by interpreting and utilizing engineering drawings, provided specifications, written assembly instructions, and test procedures.
  • Operate material/hardware handling equipment including – but not limited to – forklift, overhead cranes, other lifting equipment, etc.
  • Perform assembly and checkouts of various ground support equipment and facility equipment related to spacesuit operations.
  • Collaborate with Engineers and/or teams of diverse skills and backgrounds to develop and document activities such as assembly work instructions and/or hardware processing procedures.
  • Perform routine maintenance functions such as daily clean-up of work areas to reduce FOD and maintain clean room and safety guidelines.
  • Consistently apply written, verbal, listening and visual media and skills as appropriate to ensure accurate communication.
  • Proactively identify issues and problems and make recommendations.
  • Consistently take ownership of and responsibility for personal and team performance to promote continuous improvement.
  • Assist the AxEVA Production Lead with the Management and maintenance of lab areas.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience
  • Associate degree required, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience; commercial or military aircraft experience strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of hands‑on experience as an electronics technician.
  • Strong track record of delivering outcomes in ambiguous, fast‑moving environments.
  • Proactive problem‑solver with sound judgment and the ability to address complex challenges effectively.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to meet tight deadlines while ensuring high‑quality results.

Work Environment

Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on the task.

Requirements
  • Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.
  • Management has the prerogative to select at any level for which the position is advertised.
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship or US Permanent Residency is a requirement for this position.
  • Must be willing to work evenings and weekends as needed to meet critical project milestones.
Physical Requirements
  • Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of the time)
  • May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of the time)
