Position: Full-Time Stitcher

Hale Centre Theatre is seeking a skilled and adaptable Stitcher to join our Costume Shop team. The Stitcher is responsible for constructing, altering, and repairing costumes for stage productions while working closely with the Costume Shop team and following direction from the Shop Supervisor, Draper/ Tailor, and First Hand.

Position Summary

The Stitcher constructs costumes from patterns and specifications, performs alterations and repairs, and helps prepare costumes for fittings, rehearsals, and performances. The position requires strong sewing and garment construction skills, attention to detail, effective time management, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

Responsibilities
  • Construct costumes from start to finish using patterns, specifications, and direction from supervisors.
  • Perform alterations, repairs, and adjustments to men's and women's costumes to achieve proper fit, comfort, appearance, and functionality.
  • Sew costumes by hand and machine using a variety of fabrics and construction techniques.
  • Follow costume designs, patterns, specifications, and construction instructions while maintaining the intended design and appearance.
  • Manage multiple projects and changing priorities while meeting production deadlines.
  • Work closely with Costume Shop staff, designers, dressers, and other production departments to address construction and fitting needs.
  • Identify and resolve construction, and sewing issues efficiently.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Properly care for tools, equipment, materials, and costumes.
  • Perform routine maintenance and adjustments to sewing equipment as needed.
  • Follow all workplace safety procedures.
  • Be prepared for increased workloads and schedule flexibility during fittings, dress rehearsals, and technical rehearsals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Draper/ Tailor or First Hand.
Qualifications
  • Professional experience in hand sewing, machine sewing, and garment construction.
  • Experience constructing costumes or garments from the ground up.
  • Experience altering and fitting men's and women's garments.
  • Experience with a variety of hand sewing techniques.
  • Knowledge of a variety of fabrics, sewing techniques, and garment construction methods.
  • Experience operating a variety of sewing machines, including single-needle industrial, industrial zigzag, overlock/serger, and domestic straight and zigzag machines.
  • Ability to operate an industrial steam iron.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and work within established deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot construction and fit issues.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to take direction and adjust priorities as production needs change.
  • Previous theatrical costume experience is preferred, but strong professional sewing and garment construction experience will also be considered.
  • Ability to safely lift and carry up to 30 lbs. as needed.
Work Environment

This position is part of an energetic Costume Shop of approximately 25 team members supporting live theatrical productions. The Stitcher will work closely with the Costume Shop team, our in-house Craft team, and outside costume builders to support the construction and completion of costumes for production. The ideal candidate is a collaborative team member who takes pride in creating high-quality work, supports those around them, and contributes positively to a busy and creative shop environment.

Work may involve changing priorities, production deadlines, fittings, dress rehearsals, technical rehearsals, and performances.
