Job Summary

This position is funded through a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The Basic Skills Ambassador supports eligible veterans in achieving academic success and preparing for postsecondary education through the Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) Program.

Responsibilities include providing individualized instruction in English, mathematics, basic computer skills, and college success strategies; assessing participant needs; developing academic success plans; and monitoring academic progress.

As a program representative, the incumbent conducts outreach, recruitment, and community engagement activities to identify and serve low‑income and potential first‑generation college veterans throughout the grant‑approved service area. The position also represents VUB at community events and performs other duties as assigned in support of program goals and mission.

Work schedule is predominantly at the WSU – Ogden Campus, with occasional travel to colleges located within the grant‑approved target area (Weber, Davis, and Salt Lake County).

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree with sufficient math and English composition to successfully tutor Veterans Upward Bound participants in English and Math
  • One year of tutoring in an area of concern (math, English, foreign language, computers, and/or language)
Preferred Qualifications
  • One year of teaching experience in at least one area of direct concern (math, English, computers, foreign language, and/or science): formal training accepted
  • Expertise in basic skills instruction
  • Experience in teaching basic computer literacy
  • History of working with low‑income and first‑generation veterans
  • Military veteran

Light work. Exerting up to 20 lbs of force occasionally and/or up to 10 lbs of force frequently and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Use of arm and/or leg controls exerting forces greater than that for sedentary work.

Visual acuity requirements including color, depth perception and field of vision. Required to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; using a computer terminal; extensive reading. Required to have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment.

The conditions the worker will be subject to in this position: none. The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions (such as in typical office or administrative work).
