Sterile Processing Technician
Job DescriptionPerforms and participates in decontamination, cleaning, assembling, packaging, scanning, sterilization, storage, and distribution of reusable surgical instrumentation and equipment.
Responsibilities- Extensive knowledge of processes used in decontamination, inspection, cleaning, assembling, and packaging of medical/surgical material including linens, instruments, and equipment to ensure a sterile and functioning supply of materials.
- Prepare trays for designated areas according to prescribed procedures and wrap/package items for specified areas.
- Operate bar code instrument tracking system.
- Disassemble, clean, assemble, and test specialty instrumentation and equipment for proper functioning.
- Differentiate between single-use and reusable items.
- Decontaminate and sterilize instruments, medical supplies, and equipment, and assemble, wrap, and sterilize trays.
- Follow proper Standard Precautions in decontamination and sterilization areas.
- Monitor biological and chemical wash solutions to ensure quality and consistency.
- Sort mismatched sets of instruments, trays, and medical equipment and make them available to sterile processing customers in a timely manner.
- Restock, label, and maintain inventory; submit requisitions; collect and distribute instruments, trays, crash carts, and facility medical equipment.
- Perform environmental maintenance duties and assist in maintaining inventory levels in sterile processing, the operating room, and in equipment storage areas.
- Verify that equipment functions properly; requisition equipment maintenance, repair or replacement, and remove defective equipment.
- Maintain a clean work area.
- Assist with maintaining established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, and quality improvement, safety, and environmental and infection control standards.
- Communicate appropriately using good interpersonal skills.
Standing for prolonged periods, frequent walking, reaching overhead, and repetition.
Proficient communication, both auditory and verbal, with colleagues, vendors, and surgeons. Attention to detail and ability to write legibly.
Must be able to lift, push, or pull >50 lbs.
May be exposed to radiation, fumes, chemicals, cold, noise, blood and/or bodily fluids, and infectious diseases.
Qualifications- High School Diploma or Equivalent.
- State licensure or certification as a Sterilization Technician, as required by state regulations or contract specifications.
- At least 1 year of experience as a Sterile Processing Technician in a fast‑paced operating room environment.
