Job Summary

Accounting Intern provides administrative and operational support to the Accounting Department while gaining practical experience in nonprofit healthcare finance and accounting. Under the guidance of accounting staff, the intern assists with daily financial operations, including data entry, account reconciliations, invoice processing, document management, and financial record maintenance. This internship offers hands-on exposure to accounting principles, financial reporting, accounts payable and receivable processes, and internal controls within a healthcare environment.

The Accounting Intern is expected to maintain confidentiality, demonstrate strong attention to detail, and perform assigned tasks accurately and professionally. This position is designed to complement the intern's academic studies by providing meaningful learning opportunities and practical experience in accounting and finance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the Accounting Department with daily administrative and accounting functions.
  • Enter and maintain financial data with accuracy in accounting systems and spreadsheets.
  • Assist with accounts payable by organizing invoices, verifying supporting documentation, and preparing items for processing.
  • Support accounts receivable activities, including filing, payment tracking, and account reconciliation.
  • Assist in preparing bank reconciliations and resolving discrepancies under supervision.
  • Organize, scan, and maintain accounting records in accordance with organizational record retention policies.
  • Assist with monthly financial close activities, including gathering supporting documentation and preparing schedules.
  • Prepare and update spreadsheets, reports, and financial summaries using Microsoft Excel.
  • Assist with data entry related to general ledger accounts and journal entries under the direction of accounting staff.
  • Support internal audits by organizing financial records and compiling requested documentation.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of financial information and comply with organizational policies and procedures.
  • Participate in department meetings, training sessions, and assigned learning activities.
  • Communicate professionally with internal departments to obtain supporting documentation and resolve routine accounting inquiries.
  • Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned to support departmental operations and educational learning objectives.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education:
    • Currently enrolled as a junior or senior at an accredited college or university, pursuing a bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Experience:
    • Previous accounting, finance, bookkeeping, or administrative experience is preferred but not required.
    • Coursework in accounting, finance, or business-related subjects is required.
    • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, is preferred.
    • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality, work with attention to detail, and manage multiple tasks in a professional environment.

    Certifications:

    • No licenses or certifications are required.
    • Current enrollment in an accredited college or university accounting or finance program is required.
    • Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification or other relevant certifications are preferred but not required.
