Work involves the operation of moderately complex equipment utilized in the maintenance and construction of roads and drainage facilities.
Salary will be determined depending on qualifications of candidates who exceed the minimum requirements. Additional compensation may be provided based on licensure.
Responsibilities- Operate heavy equipment, including dump trucks, steel wheel rollers, mixers, front-end loaders, skid-steer loaders, forklifts, backhoes, hydraulic boom mowers, graders, mini-track excavators, and other equipment as assigned to complete road construction and maintenance projects.
- Operate motor graders in grading and stabilizing roads and shoulders to maintain proper drainage and a smooth surface.
- Perform daily pre-trip inspections, preventive maintenance, and minor mechanical maintenance work on assigned equipment.
- Keep records and submit reports on work performed as required.
- Observe and report road deficiencies that cannot be corrected within assigned maintenance responsibilities to the immediate supervisor.
- Answer routine questions for the public.
- May be required to operate Gradalls, track excavators, bulldozers, low boys, mowers, tractors, and other equipment as necessary to complete operational work requirements.
- Perform other related work as required, including operation of additional equipment assigned for road construction and maintenance projects.
- In the event of an emergency, all employees are considered essential personnel and may be required to perform alternate duties.
- High School Diploma or GED and at least 1 year of experience in the maintenance and construction of roads and drainage facilities. A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License, Class B, and obtain a Class A within six months of employment.
- Must obtain, within six months of employment, certification in Work Zone Safety from IMSA, Confined Space Entry Training, OSHA requirements, or other certifications as required by work assignment and directed by the Division Manager.
- Considerable knowledge of the effective operation and maintenance of heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules and regulations, and effective precautionary measures necessary to avoid accidents and hazards associated with heavy equipment use.
- Ability to understand and carry out general instructions, read, write, and complete work records.
- Ability to communicate effectively with the public and maintain equipment in good physical condition sufficient to satisfactorily perform job duties, even in adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to deal with the public in an effective and cooperative manner.
- One year of experience in operating moderately heavy construction and maintenance equipment or successful completion of an approved heavy construction equipment training program.
- Proficient in word processing and other applicable software.
