DESCRIPTION

The Peer Mentor, First Generation Program serves as a role model and guide for students as they navigate their college experience. Fosters a supportive and welcoming environment, connects students to campus resources, and provides academic and personal support to promote student success.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Mentors assigned first generation students by offering support, encouragement, and referrals to campus resources.
  • Initiates, develops, and maintains relationships via multiple communication methods.
  • Provides guidance on college practices and systems.
  • Attends and actively participates in First Generation Program events.
  • Collaborates with other Peer Mentors and program staff to foster student success.
  • Maintains and updates documentation on interactions and activities.
  • Participates in trainings and meetings.
  • Performs other duties as may be required or assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS Required
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
  • Minimum Seminole State College second year student by the fall term.
  • Maintain a 2.75 overall GPA and be in good academic standing throughout each semester.

  • Experience with the college’s student systems and resources.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Ability to locate, access, and refer students to campus departments and resources.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal) with students, peers, and staff including speaking in front of a group.
  • Strong verbal, written, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and ability to deal with change.
  • Strong Microsoft skills (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and the ability to become proficient in video conferencing applications, including Zoom/Teams.
  • Ability to become proficient using college systems, including My Seminole State , Navigate, and Canvas.
  • Ability to exhibit a professional, courteous demeanor.
  • Committed to working in a multicultural environment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS
  • Minimum work commitment of five (5) hours a week.
  • Campus location and total hours based on program needs.

Pay Benefits and Work Schedule

$14.00 hourly up to 20 hours per week based on department needs and budget constraints. Exact hours will vary depending on student and office needs.

THIS IS A STUDENT POOL POSITION. While a posting may exist on our website, there may or may not be a need at this time; however, submitted applications remain active for one academic year and are available for the Department to review on an ongoing basis.
