Responsibilities
The Wharton-Smith Center for Construction at Seminole State College of Florida seeks a dynamic full‑time faculty member to teach construction core courses including estimating, MEP systems, construction accounting and finance, construction plan reading, BIM and Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) technologies. The position is a regular full‑time teaching role on a 196‑day contract with potential for continuation. Assigned campus location may vary based on enrollment and may require travel between campuses.
- Project‑based teaching approach and support student learning.
- Maintain the industry‑driven curriculum and the ACCE accreditation student learning outcome assessments.
- Support college policies, procedures, and inclusiveness.
- Participate in department and college activities and serve on committees.
- Engage with community partners and participate in local humanitarian service‑learning projects.
- Establish and maintain relationships with local high schools and university partners.
- Participate in grant‑writing proposals related to the construction industry.
- Attend college‑wide meetings, training, and graduation ceremonies.
- Interface with local construction companies to remain current with workforce needs and promote internship and mentoring opportunities.
- Plans, organizes, and teaches construction classes; develops detailed outlines and syllabi for each class.
- Uses professional growth opportunities, teaching strategies, and student engagement techniques.
- Advises students on academic progress and supports student learning success beyond the classroom.
- Collaborates with faculty on curriculum improvements and committee work.
- Contributes to a collegial, collaborative work environment and engages with the diverse community served by the college.
- Performs all site‑specific responsibilities as assigned.
- Option 1:
- Master’s degree from an accredited institution in Building Construction, Construction Management, Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical or Structural) or Architecture.
- Minimum two years of related professional experience.
- Option 2:
- Master’s degree in Business, Business Administration, or Project Management AND a Bachelor’s degree in Building Construction, Construction Management, Civil Engineering or closely related field.
- Minimum six years of professional construction experience.
- Current professional license (PE, CGC, RA, or CPBD) or industry‑recognized certification such as CPC, DBIA Certification, or PMP.
- Option 3:
- Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Construction or a related discipline.
- Previous teaching experience at the college level.
- Minimum three years of direct in‑field project management experience as superintendent or project manager; experience in core construction skills such as estimating, scheduling, MEP systems, risk management, and project management.
- Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) in Construction or a related discipline.
- Experience with emerging technology and innovative pedagogy (e.g., Hololens, laser scanners, drones, Bluebeam).
- Previous leadership experience in an educational setting.
- Proficiency in industry‑standard software such as BIM, Revit, Navisworks, Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, and Plan Grid.
- Familiarity with the ACCE student learning outcomes and standards.
- Experience with online learning modalities.
- Understanding of the learning‑centered approach to teaching and project‑based learning.
- Experience in writing grant proposals or participation in grant activities.
- Commitment to creating an atmosphere of quality instruction.
- Native‑level English reading, writing, and speaking proficiency.
- Solid understanding of instructional technology.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Professional, courteous demeanor.
- Ability to work in a multi‑cultural environment.
- Works in a classroom/lab environment.
- May travel between campuses and occasionally off‑site for field trips and special events.
