The Florida Department of Health in Seminole County is seeking self-motivated, hardworking individuals for a Medical Technologist I located in Sanford, FL 32773. This is a full-time, in-office position.

Condition of Employment

This position may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Emergency duty includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disasters or threat of disaster, man-made or natural. This position will maintain confidentiality and security of records as specified by departmental regulations and laws.

Your Specific Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Executive Communications Health Nursing Director - SES, the incumbent will provide a variety of health services and client coordination duties within the Clinic/Laboratory/Community area of the Health Department. The duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Specimen Collection: collect samples and specimens of blood, urine and other bodily fluids ordered by a clinical representative; initiate, analyze, complete, and log results; perform phlebotomies; prepare reports of test results; perform preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment; perform quality control testing; support Lab/Clinic/Community with specimen collection; train new staff.
  • In-House and Mobile Outreach Tests: conduct in-house and mobile/outreach testing (pregnancy tests, clean catches, urine collection, blood collection, cultures/smears, finger sticks); initiate, analyze, complete, and log results; provide results to clinical representatives; coordinate billing information with the Billing Dept.
  • Packaging/Shipping of Specimens: wrap, package, label, and ship specimens sent off-site; ensure proper manifest and tracking; manage medication inventory and sterilization maintenance.
  • Administrative Support Coverage: input lab test requests into HMS, Lab Corps, and Quest; assist in receipt and distribution of results; follow up with billing; order supplies; inspect/maintain equipment; reconcile invoices.
  • Equipment Validation: review and verify laboratory equipment; notify staff of discrepancies and coordinate follow-up actions.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned; may be required to work beyond normal hours for disasters and Public Health Emergencies, including Special Needs Shelters.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of general office procedures, practices, and organizational skills; cultural sensitivity; medical technology practices and procedures; laboratory tests and equipment; chemicals and reagents; significance of laboratory tests. Skills in operating laboratory and scientific equipment; professional customer service; taking vital signs. Abilities to communicate effectively; establish and maintain working relationships; use online systems and word processing; perform basic math; organize and maintain files;

follow instructions; manage multiple tasks in a busy environment.

Qualifications

Clinical laboratory experience required.

Preferred – experience submitting laboratory test orders in an electronic system.
