PUBLIC WORKS / UTILITY DEPARTMENT

Under general supervision, the purpose of the job is to conduct routine installation, maintenance, repair, and management of various valves to ensure efficient and reliable operation of the water supply.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform preventative maintenance on valves, fire hydrants, air and vacuum relief valves, and other distribution system devices.
  • Ability to use Geographic Information System.
  • Assemble, disassemble, test, and troubleshoot valves and other equipment using hand or power tools.
  • Install, replace, and diagnose machinery and mechanical equipment.
  • Adhere to safety and regulatory guidelines.
  • Perform routine inspections, cleaning, lubrication, and testing of valves and related components.
  • Participate in field service calls as required; emergency repairs while working with vendors.
  • Operate diagnostic equipment and handheld tablets.
  • Purchase replacement/special parts and/or vendor services.
  • Ability to read technical drawings.
  • Perform dead end flushing.
ADDITIONAL POSITION FUNCTIONS

Performs related duties as directed when such duties are a logical and appropriate assignment to the position.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
  • High School Diploma or GED; supplemented by one (1) year previous experience in valve calibration, maintenance, or troubleshooting or a related field.
  • Must possess and maintain a Florida Department of Environmental Protection Level III or higher Water Distribution System Operator License. Employee without said license will be allowed 18 months from date of employment to attain this license.
  • Must possess a current and valid Florida Driver’s License.
  • Employee shall obtain the National Incident Management System (NIMS) 100 Introduction to the Incident Command System and IS-700 National Incident Management System, an Introduction within six (6) months of employment.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Thorough knowledge of and adherence to the Environmental Health and Safety, Quality, and Regulatory Guidelines.
  • Thorough knowledge of pre-established local, State, and Federal policies, procedures and regulatory requirements applicable to the work.
  • Ability to utilize personal computers, standard office equipment and standard software applications, e.g., word processors, database software, spreadsheet applications.
  • Ability to communicate professionally verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, employees, division and department heads, public/private sector contacts.
  • Ability to organize work, prioritize, meet established deadlines, and follow up on assignments with minimum direction.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, or schedule form.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

While performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to lift, move or carry objects up to 50 pounds; ascend or descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles; utilize feet and legs or hands and arms; maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching, or navigating narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces; bend body downward and forward by bending spine and legs;

move about on hands and knees or hands and feet; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects; and reach with hands and arms.

While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is occasionally required to push and/or pull over 100 pounds.

While performing the essential functions of this position the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic substances, excessive noise, vehicular traffic, and dampness/humidity. While performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent is regularly exposed to possible bodily injury from electrical shock; falling from high, exposed places; and moving mechanical parts of equipment, tools, and machinery.
