DESCRIPTION: The Security Officer I is accountable for crime prevention and mitigation through vehicle, on foot, surveillance cameras, and various patrol methods. Provides traffic education and enforcement to the College community to prevent accidents and congestion. Provides a safe environment and protection of College personnel/property using industry-standard crime prevention techniques to minimize or reduce campus crimes. Investigates and documents security-related incidents that occur on campus.
Responsibilities
DESCRIPTION: The Security Officer I is accountable for crime prevention and mitigation through vehicle, on foot, surveillance cameras, and various patrol methods. Provides traffic education and enforcement to the College community to prevent accidents and congestion. Provides a safe environment and protection of College personnel/property using industry-standard crime prevention techniques to minimize or reduce campus crimes. Investigates and documents security-related incidents that occur on campus.
Essential Functions
- Responds to emergencies of a medical, criminal, and/or mechanical nature.
- Investigates incidents that occur, interviews participants and witnesses, completes incident reports, and document these instances.
- Patrols College properties to ensure a safe environment for college students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
- Utilizes patrol techniques to prevent/deter crime, including but not limited to, walking, camera monitoring, and driving.
- Provides traffic education enforcement, and traffic management to the College community to prevent accidents and congestion via courtesy warnings and citations.
- Opens and locks down buildings at the close of classes and operations.
- Records information on persons entering buildings after business hours and identifies persons on College property when the college is closed.
- Provides customer service to College personnel, students, and visitors in a courteous and professional manner.
- Performs other duties that may be required or assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
- Valid Florida driver’s license or the ability to obtain a Florida driver’s license within 30 days of employment, with acceptable driving record.
- Certified in CPR/First Aid. If not currently certified, must become certified within six months of employment.
- Security or related training certificate that meets or exceeds security requirements under Florida Statute 493 Class D License required. Certification must be kept current and active.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience as a security officer/guard or in a position with similar duties.
Special Requirements
- Due to the need for emergency adjustments of work schedules or for campus emergencies, the following are necessary for this position:
- In-residence telephone service or cell phone
- Dependable transportation
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of security operations and procedures.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, as well as critical thinking ability and ability to make quick decisions in emergency situations.
- Excellent organization skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to enforce regulations consistently.
- Ability to describe people and objects in accurate detail.
- Ability to operate a computer and its software, compose concise and comprehensive reports in Microsoft Word or other incident reporting software and maintain accurate records.
- Ability to exhibit a professional, courteous demeanor and interact effectively with students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
