Position: Senior Signal Technician (Maintenance & Inspections)

Signal Technician

Skilled work involving the repair, maintenance, programming, modifications, and construction of traffic signals, traffic signal systems, communications devices and school flasher systems. Performs preventive maintenance of traffic signals. Performs corrective maintenance on traffic signals. Sets up and tests new equipment to be installed in the field. Gathers and interprets data from traffic signal systems and assists in providing public record timing sheets.

Salary will be determined depending on qualifications of candidates who exceed the minimum requirements as outlined within the job description Additional compensation based on licensure Signal Technicians with demonstrated experience can expect a minimum rate of between $20.00 and $25.00 depending on years of experience and licensure

Essential Functions

Installs, modifies, updates and tests traffic signal equipment as needed. Programs and checks traffic control equipment. Installs and checks communication equipment relating to traffic control equipment. Performs preventive maintenance as scheduled. Performs corrective maintenance when required. Modifies signal operation and hardware as necessary. Assists with and inspects new installations by contractors. Responds to citizen concerns relating to traffic signals as well as provide safe and logical solutions.

Carries an on-call pager on a rotational basis. Maintains and recertifies signal equipment inventory. Maintains records of signal timings and certified hardware. Documents all work accomplished in Main Star. Schedules and plans maintenance activities. Assists in providing refresher training as well as training for new technology Additional Duties :
In the event of an emergency, all employees are considered essential personnel and may be required to perform alternate duties

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma/GED and three (3) years experience in the field of traffic signals preferred. Preference will be given to those with a 2 year degree or certification in electronics/electrical discipline. Must possess IMSA Work Zone Safety or the ability to obtain within three (3) months. Must possess IMSA Level I Signalization Certificate, or the ability to obtain within twelve (12) months of employment.

A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

Additional Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License. Class B CDL preferred or the ability to obtain within three (3) months. Must possess the ability to work in a responsive environment where co-workers or citizens present problems for resolution. Ability to perform technical or trades-based work that requires a solid understanding of varied types of heavy equipment. Tasks performed include operating or repairing heavy equipment (Scissor lifts, Lift trucks, Bucket truck, Boom trucks).

Knowledge of the principles and theory of electronics. Knowledge of the standard tools, materials, methods and practices of the electronic trade. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the electronic and electrical trade. Knowledge of overhead regulatory and advisory signs and the tools and apparatus necessary for their installation and maintenance. Knowledge of the MUTCD and Florida Department of Transportation Standard Specifications for road and bridge construction pertaining to traffic signals, traffic signal control devices and associated equipment.

Ability to learn techniques of traffic signal installation, maintenance and repair. Ability to read and interpret plans, sketches, and blueprints for use in the planning and installation of traffic signals. Ability to use standard electronic test equipment. Ability to learn techniques of traffic signal installation, maintenance and repair. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to understand and carry out directions.

Ability to plan work assignments. Ability to operate small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems, computers for data entry, word processing, and/or accounting purposes. Knowledge needed to operate more complex and technical computer applications, such as signal related software Ability to operate or maintain small/light equipment, such as power tools, and medium equipment and machinery, such as vehicles or generators.

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
