Position SummaryA Custodian is responsible for a variety of tasks including washing, mopping, scrubbing, dusting, sweeping, moving, event set‑up/cleanup, and snow removal. Performs routine, detail and deep cleaning along with basic maintenance procedures to ensure a high standard of safety, cleanliness, efficiency and customer service for the Sanford School Department.
Minimum Requirements- Previous custodial experience preferred
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- Current Maine CHRC (fingerprinting) or ability to obtain
- Citizenship, residency or work visa required
- Pass a criminal background check and pre‑employment physical
- Ability to work alone or as part of a team
- Ability to climb and work from a ladder
- Ability to perform snow removal
- Flexibility to meet the needs of the district (hours, locations, duties, etc.)
- Physical ability – able to work on your feet for 7+ hours a day and lift up to 50 lbs
- Personal qualities – dependable, honest, enthusiastic, approachable
- Professional qualities – detail‑oriented, self‑directed and able to communicate effectively
- Performs routine custodial duties; dusting, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning restrooms and restocking supplies
- Performs deep cleaning duties; carpet cleaning, floor stripping and refinishing, furniture, walls, lights and windows
- Performs routine maintenance to custodial equipment and supplies
- Empties trash receptacles and disposes trash into dumpsters
- Ensures all doors and windows are locked after cleaning areas
- Reports needs and concerns to head custodians
- Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices
- Assists in on‑the‑job training of new staff on routine procedures
- Performs cleaning functions specific to the assigned facilities and/or based on seasonal/project requirements
- Performs tasks associated with setting up, breaking down and cleaning up of building activities as needed
- Performs snow shoveling, snow blowing and treatment of sidewalks and entryways with salt, sand or ice melt
- Performs light maintenance, such as replacing light bulbs, adjusting furniture or other similar activities
- Performs miscellaneous job‑related duties as assigned
- Ability to understand and follow multi‑step verbal and written instructions
- Ability to read, understand, follow and apply safety procedures
- Ability to safely use district‑provided custodial equipment and supplies
- Ability to use hand and power tools associated with custodial work

Vision, hearing, speech, body mobility, strength and environmental requirements are detailed as follows:
- Vision:
Ability to perform duties in low lighting.
- Hearing:
Ability to tolerate noisy conditions.
- Speech:
Ability to be understood in face‑to‑face communications and on a two‑way radio.
- Body Mobility:
Maintain an average walking pace for 7+ hours a day, reach or lift.
- Strength:
Moderate lifting or carrying up to 25‑50 lbs.
- Environmental:
Work in dusty/dirty environments, exposure to chemicals, weather, and machinery.
