Position Summary: The City of Santa Ana seeks a part‑time internship (≈19 hours per week) focused on supporting Engineering and Public Works functions. Applicants must be currently enrolled at the undergraduate level and meet the qualifications listed below.
Responsibilities DevelopmentUnder the direction of Engineering staff, the intern will assist residents, contractors, developers and utility companies at the Public Works Agency counter; prepare and modify cost estimate spreadsheets, basic exhibits and presentations; conduct data research and field investigations; receive and distribute plan submittals; issue construction, transportation, utility and other permits; review site plans for basic private developments; calculate development impact fees from building plans;
prepare correspondence to permit applicants; perform general office tasks; and perform other related duties as assigned.
Assist engineers with traffic field investigations for existing conditions and proposed projects; conduct engineering and warrant studies; research project records, files and plans; prepare and modify plans using Microstation or manual drafting; use Microsoft Office tools (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Access) to prepare presentation materials; enter data; retrieve and place radar trailers; and perform additional duties such as speed studies, pedestrian and vehicular counts, collision data review, parking surveys, issuance of notices, copying, filing, public interaction, and signal operations support.
WaterResources
Assist in collecting field data; generate technical data, organize documents and coordinate transmission to others; conduct on‑site surveys; scan, record, and maintain directories; update and create engineering drawings with Micro Station; support preparation and distribution of reports; process correspondence and material requisitions; and perform other assigned functions.
CIP EngineeringAssignments support the design and/or construction phase of projects.
DesignAssist with engineering drawings and estimates; prepare and modify spreadsheets, project displays, and reports; conduct data research, field investigations, and respond to public and agency inquiries; perform general office tasks; and perform related duties as assigned.
ConstructionAssist with construction management of projects under the City's capital improvement program, including water, sewer, storm drain lines, traffic signals, buildings, parks, and street improvements; conduct spreadsheets, data research, correspondence, field investigations, preparation of reports, respond to citizen and agency inquiries, assist construction inspectors and survey crews; and support pre‑construction and post‑construction activities.
Characteristics of Successful Performers- Strong interest in engineering; comfortable dealing with the public and handling complaints with tact and diplomacy.
- Detail-oriented, organized, and skilled in time management within a dynamic work environment.
- Flexible, with excellent verbal and written communication and computer skills; works well with others and independently.
- Must have ample knowledge of AutoCAD, Micro Station, and Microsoft Office applications and be comfortable in a Windows environment.
- Possession and retention of a valid driver's license is a condition of continued employment.
- Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish is preferred but not required.
- Traffic: Must be enrolled in an undergraduate Civil, Electrical or Pre‑Engineering program with a current GPA of 2.50 or higher (Sophomore or Junior preferred). Graduate students are not eligible.
- Development/Water Resources: Must be enrolled in an undergraduate Civil, Environmental, Mechanical or Pre‑Engineering program with a current GPA of 2.50 or higher (Sophomore or Junior preferred). Graduate students are not eligible.
- CIP Engineering: Must be enrolled in an undergraduate Civil Engineering or Construction Management Program with a current GPA of 2.50 or higher (Sophomore or Junior preferred). Graduate students are not eligible.
- Must be currently enrolled at the undergraduate level in an accredited engineering or related program.
