District Safety Officer

Under the direction of the school principal or designee, patrol school buildings, yards, parking areas and supervise after-school events to maintain order and prevent illegal acts.

Representative duties include: touring school facilities to prevent altercations or campus disorder and to watch for students or outsiders engaged in illegal or inappropriate behavior; checking students who appear to be out of class or visitors, who may be loitering, to prevent vandalism, thefts and other illegal activities; contacting the police department to report crimes; apprehending and holding suspects; investigating vandalism, thefts and illegal activities;

assisting in classrooms if discipline problems arise; escorting students from class to the office; observing student behavior and reporting to the school nurse and administrators any erratic behavior to suggest drugs or physical abuse; transporting ill students to the office; transporting money as required; supervising student lunch areas; breaking up fights and dispersing student gatherings when unruly; developing plans and directing emergency evacuations and other activities for safety of individuals;

taking custody of students brought in by Santa Ana Police Department; administering first aid; assisting school nurse; cutting locks for students with locker or bicycle problems; conducting bicycle safety checks and coordinating the registration of bicycles; checking and securing facilities as directed; patrolling the front of the school and traffic area as assigned; supervising after-school activities to provide physical safety for individuals and property;

searching for bombs if threats are received; observing and reporting hazards or activities which might result in negligence charges against the District; writing reports; performing related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and abilities include: radio codes and two-way radio operation; health and safety regulations; reading and writing communications skills; applicable sections of State Education Code;
Penal Code as it relates to juvenile; school rules; first aid and CPR; search, seizure and investigative techniques; police work, drugs, gangs, self-protection.

Ability to: control vehicle traffic on school grounds; deal with gang-related incidents; lift heavy objects; work independently with little direction; understand and follow oral and written directions; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; perform the essential functions of the job.

Education and experience:

any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and one year in law enforcement or related experience.

Licenses, certificates or other requirements: valid California driver's license; first aid certificate and CPR certificate; applicant must also show satisfactory proof of completion of the PC 832 course (Laws of Arrest) and proof of completion of one of the following courses: PC 832.2 (School Police Reserve Officer Training) or PC 823.3 (Campus Law Enforcement) or School Security Training (per Senate Bill 1620 and Education Code 38001.5).

Working conditions:

environment includes outdoor environment, driving a vehicle to conduct work, seasonal heat and cold or adverse weather conditions; physical abilities include walking campus grounds, seeing to monitor student behavior, making reports and reading materials, dexterity of hands and fingers to operate assigned equipment, hearing and speaking to exchange information, lifting or moving objects, normally not exceeding sixty (60) pounds but on occasion up to one hundred (100) pounds, physical agility and stamina, mobility to do running, climbing and jumping;

hazards include contact with dissatisfied or abusive individuals, possible fights and confrontations.
