Job Description & How to Apply Below
Cal Teach and the Education Department invite applicants for a Unit 18 Lecturer position to teach an undergraduate course introducing students to mathematics education.
The lecturer will teach the undergraduate course ED 128 Cal Teach, Elementary Mathematics Education in spring quarter 2026. This course introduces the learning and teaching of mathematics in grades K-8. The seminar-style course meets weekly on campus for one quarter. Timing of the course schedule is flexible (e.g., afternoons or evenings). The lecturer's responsibilities include developing or adapting a syllabus for the course, setting up a Canvas site, giving and grading assignments, providing office hours for students, and submitting final grades before the end of the quarter, as well as assisting the collection of student data for Cal Teach.
The lecturer will be supported by Cal Teach colleagues in the Department of Education at UCSB's Gevirtz School of Education. A continuation of the teaching assignment in academic year 2026/27 is aspired.
Comprising nine campuses, the University of California's Cal Teach program provides a sequence of undergraduate courses and field experiences in K-12 schools to introduce students to mathematics and science teaching. ED 128 is a Cal Teach course that complements students' work in their majors, providing both the deep subject matter knowledge and the strong pedagogical skills needed to increase equity and access to STEM for all California's diverse students.
The initiative began in response to both state and national concerns about the critical shortage of highly qualified elementary and secondary teachers. The Cal Teach program at UCSB offers undergraduate courses in mathematics, science, engineering, and climate justice education at the elementary and secondary levels, supporting approximately 200 undergraduate students per year, mainly from the STEM fields. Many of these students pursue a minor in science and mathematics education.
