Salary range: $250,000 – $400,000 (budgeted). Official range: $199,700 – $509,900. Salary offers are based on qualifications.

Position description

The University of California, Santa Barbara seeks an experienced and visionary leader for the Dean position of the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education. Reporting to the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, the Dean will serve as the academic leader and chief executive of the School, leading faculty, staff, and students to sustain academic distinction and envision its next chapter of impact and excellence.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Develop a strategic vision that leverages the School’s strengths to maintain national and international prominence in research, scholarship, and societal impact.
  • Build a sustainable model for finance, revenue generation, research support, and graduate student support.
  • Advance academic programs, expand undergraduate enrollment and degree options, support faculty growth, and foster academic community.
  • Cultivate an organizational culture of transparency, cohesion, and collaboration.
  • Sustain and deepen community engagement and external partnerships.
  • Advocate for the School within and beyond UCSB, elevating its visibility and reputation.
Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application):

A doctoral degree in education, applied psychology, or a related field.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Record of academic excellence qualifying for a tenured full professor in a Gevirtz School department.
  • Distinguished teacher, scholar, and academic leader in education, applied psychology, or related field with passion for academics, research, teaching, and community‑engaged service.
  • Significant administrative experience with a track record of success in a complex institution.
  • Intellectual leadership across the diverse work within the School.
  • Understanding of finances and ability to align academic priorities with budget, making thoughtful resource decisions.
  • Extensive track record in building sponsored research and supporting scholarly work to sustain a top‑tier research program.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student success and the UC mission of accessibility, excellence, and community.
  • Capacity for fundraising and generating new revenue sources, including cultivating partners, alumni, and external constituencies.
  • Outstanding communication and listening skills to articulate vision and inspire others.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence to connect with UCSB community and collaborate across campus and externally.
  • Collaborative leadership approach and passion for advancing the unit in alignment with the institution.
