Additional Stipends

Additional $104 monthly stipend available if fluent in Spanish and an oral exam is passed.

Additional $42 monthly stipend available for a Bachelor's degree.

Purpose of Position

To assist a certificated teacher in reinforcing instruction to individual or small groups of students in a classroom or other learning environment.

Reporting

Reports to a school site principal or other certificated administrator.

Employment Status

Three to six hours per day, nine months per year. (FLSA Non-exempt)

Location

Adams School, Harding School, La Colina JH and Goleta Valley JH.

Essential Functions
  • Provide tutoring to individual students or small groups, reinforcing instruction as directed by the certificated teacher.
  • Monitor and oversee instructional drills, exercises, practices and assignments; administer, monitor and score a variety of tests and other instructional exercises.
  • Perform routine clerical duties to support the certificated teacher, including copying instructional materials, scoring papers, recording test scores, and maintaining student files.
  • Operate instructional equipment such as computer workstations or iPads; gather, distribute or collect instructional materials and supplies; collaborate with certificated teachers to meet student needs.
  • Assist the certificated teacher in observing student behavior and adherence to classroom or school rules and policies.
  • Operate a variety of contemporary office equipment; operate PC or MAC computers and mass market software or applications, including MS Office and Google Suite.
  • Assure the well-being of students by following health and safety practices and procedures; administer minor first aid as assigned; refer injured or ill students to appropriate staff as required.
  • Direct group activities as assigned; assist in monitoring cafeteria, recess and playground activities; accompany students on field trips.
  • Maintain punctual and consistent attendance.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of student records and information according to established practices and procedures.
Other Functions
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Participate in staff meetings, Professional Learning Community, or in-service meetings as directed.
Working Conditions & Physical Demands

Inside work with no exposure to weather conditions and some outside work with exposure to weather conditions during outdoor activities, recess or field trips.

Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone; seeing to read a variety of documents and to monitor students; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate office equipment; sitting for extended periods of time, bending or stooping to assist students with learning activities, kneeling, crouching and walking for extended periods of time; reaching overhead, above the shoulders or horizontally to store or retrieve materials.

  • Knowledge of core subjects taught in K12 school districts; basic instructional strategies and techniques; general understanding of student learning styles or modalities.
  • Ability to relate to students individually or in small groups.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and staff; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Ability to supervise students and follow established disciplinary practices.
  • Ability to read, interpret, apply and explain school or district rules, policies or procedures.

Education, Training and Experience

Graduation from high school and at least one (1) year experience working with children in an educational or other organized setting.

Additional Requirements
  • ESSA Para educator requirement can be met by completion of ONE of the following:
    • SBUSD Para educator Math/Language Arts Assessment
    • California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST)
    • Completion of two (2) years college (48 semester units) or A.A. degree (or higher)
  • Successful passage of District bilingual assessment.
